Carlisle isn't bad, as far as Algorithms is concerned. He basically lectures on stuff that isn't on the test, but the tests are - in essence - simple if you cram the night before...as far as the tests are concerned. You basically hear him say "basically" about 50 times per lecture, as far as the lectures are concerned. In essence though, he's okay.

I'd say he's very out of touch with the programming languages he teaches within his courses. Probably due to his age. How he uses ambiguous terms during lecture, could possibly be making all of Auburn's SWE students behind the curve. Auburn University needs to investigate into "how non-understandable he teaches."

Nicest teacher in CSSE and least intimidating. Knows the topics and has no problem coming up with explanations to help you understand. Reviewing for the test he will give you the material that each question will be on (1-Master Theorem,2- Building a heap, ect) He does ramble/repeat 3 phrases during his lecture but you will get used to it.

By far the worst teacher in the department. His lectures were useless as he repeats himself every other sentence. "As far as... and Basically..." are about all you learn from going to class. I went to every class and spent hours in preparation and still came out with a C. Programming assignments are you're only saving grace as he doesn't grade them

Studied for 5-10 hours on average. Spent countless hours on pointless homework. No study help (just have the book and slides!). Gave more time and energy than many other classes and barely got a C!

Probably the worst teacher at least as far as CSSE is concerned. Basically, he doesn't teach, he just rambles. Tests are impossible. He basically gives a study guide that basically says to study everything and basically you won't know anything on the test. My advice: read as much as possible, and hope to make above average the tests.

Don't take him if you want to see high numbers. If you don't mind taking the low road, put in 4-5 hours of studying what he tells you will be on the test the day before, and get your 50. Everybody fails his tests. At the end of the class he scales and you get an A or B. No worries.

Okay, his tests are not bad at all. He asks you to write a program which are identical to problems you work on in class, easy to ace. Lowest I made was an 89. He is a pretty fair grader. Just go to class every day and bear through his TERRIBLE lectures and you will be fine. Also you will never want to hear 'Basically' or 'As Far As' ever again.

In essence, basically this teacher is crazy as far as this class is concerned. You basically don't have to go to this class and should not really bother getting old tests as far as the tests are concerned. In fact, you basically should bring your computer or other homework to work on during class as far as this class is concerned.

"As far as this teacher is concerned"..."basically" USLESS. Tests are hard, doesnt tell you what to study. Gives a day to do homework so talking to the TA or him for help is basically impossible. TA is unreachable. Words of Advice: Become friends with someone who can help you if you have difficulty.

I really like him as a guy, but he is not a very good teacher. He rambles off the slides which aren't concise so theres like 100 a day (not helpful) and they aren't from the book which is generally more useful. I made Bs in his classes after scaling and As shouldn't be too hard. He's not the worst teacher, but he definitely hurts your learning.

Used the phrases "Basically", "In essence / essentially", and "As far a [the thing] is concerned" each more than 100 times per lecture - and most of the time he used them when they didn't make sense. This guy gets confused with his own examples and his homework and test problems are convoluted. This guy is worthless as far as teaching is concerned.

I'm forced to put a rating here as most ratings here are by clueless undergrads, or by obnoxious nerds, again undergrads. The strength of Dr Carlisle is to make difficult material accessible and he does a great job of it. He has that rare talent of piquing his students' interest. Great for OS or System Admin courses in particular. V fair, v handson

Not the greatest teacher. But a really nice guy. He is always in his office, I stopped by there at least once a week. Had him for COMP 3270 and COMP 2710. 2710 is a joke if you've had any C++ experience. 3270 is going to be hard no matter who you have. I'd say Carlisle is the easiest for Algorithms compared to Dr. N.

Dr. Carlisle is useless, basically, as far as teaching is concerned. Clarity is nonexistant. His reviews are laughable. His tests.. impossible to ace. I would say avoid, but he was my only option for several classes. Sad.

Lectures seemed to cause more confusion than anything, but tests are reasonable and graded very leniently. He breaks tests down question-by-question the class before, so you know what to expect. The best way you'll learn the material is by doing the homework with others. He's always in his office and always seems to be willing to answer questions.

Every sentence begins or ends exactly like this: "Basically, actually, as far as the thing is concerned". This was supremely distracting! Quit saying "as far as the thing is concerned"!!!

I really enjoyed having him for Assembly. The class was lab-only which was much more effective for a pure programming course like this. Carlisle is in his office constantly and is always open to helping students. Tests are challenging but fair. Don't hesitate to ask him questions.
