Comment:
If you are considering taking this course in hopes of learning to write professionally, I wouldn't take it online. I didn't rate him a 1 because judging by the other reviews, he knows how to teach in person. If taken online, instructions are extremely unclear, and he doesn't teach much of anything. I think this would be different in person.

This is probably one of the most useful and beneficial classes that I have taken in College. Highly recommend if you're willing to put in the work and ask questions. :)

This course is extremely valuable to students across many majors. He gives students every opportunity to succeed being available through email to ask how to improve work. He's very clear about expectations. In-class activities help to gain skills, before doing the out of class assignments. Pay attention, ask for help, stay organized. He's the best!

He gets a bad rep as being too strict and a harsh grader. But if you email him before you submit your assignments for feedback, he lets you know what needs to be done. Make the mentioned adjustments and you'll do fine. Talking to him 1-on-1 via email or office hours is how you will pass this course.

Difficult class, but bearable. Class can be boring but lets you out early often. Each assignment is based around of the same case which can get redundant. His feedback can be vague, but there are plenty of library days and in class workshops where you spend the class time working and can ask him for help.

Overall very difficult course but I do feel like I have learned a lot. I'm usually someone who can start the paper the night before and get an A, this will not work for this class. Assignments are vague so in order to do well you really have to go out of your way to meet with him or send him a draft. Difficult class but not impossible.

Prof. Topf has a great deal of knowledge when it comes to professional writing. I took two of his courses this semester and I have greatly enjoyed them. He is a relatively difficult grader, but he has a lot of office hours, and he is available to meet via appointment for consultation. His lectures can get stale, but meeting in office hours helps.

DONE TAKE HIM! DO yourself a favor! just a super tough grader. I've never taken a class that was so hard, that could've been way easier. I think he is a smart guy, but just wants to trick his students. He words things super difficult, hard to follow because he is super boring. ! First professor here at roger that should definitely be let go

This dude is ridiculous, he makes the class so much harder and complex then it has to be. I'm a criminal justice major taking this required class and hes making us write reports on businesses. I regret not switching out. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE.

Mel definitely knows the material, he just doesn't know how to teach. His instructions and writing prompts are always pretty vague. On top of that, he required us to buy a custom book for the class that was $110 and we only used it a handful of times. Even as a senior I had trouble with this class. Do not take Professor Topf, at all costs.

His classes are what college classes should actually be. First time I've encountered one at RWU. A must take if you want to remotely be able to write a proposal to your boss in any line of work.

Everything is "vague." Might as well teach philosophy because EVERYTHING is questioned with "why?" or "I don't know what you mean." If you're 1 minute past the time class starts, your paper is late, which he is sure to mark. Try to avoid him.
