It had been 4 years since I had taken drawing I, so my confidence was lacking at the beginning. Geoffrey knew about this & encouraged me throughout the semester to keep going. He provided awesome feedback but also acknowledged something he liked in my artwork which is what helped my drawing skills/confidence improve greatly.

He is one of the best art teachers. You have to come to class and work hard but it will pay off. He knows what he's talking about. He is cool!

I think he is a nice person and means well. The advice and tips he gives are useful. My figure drawings improved. He does push you to improve your technical skills and speed. We drew people in class with charcoal and conte crayon and then did self portraits for homework.

Great teacher and artist. Geoffrey is extremely helpful, but can be blunt with his comments, so if you can't take criticism then he is not thwe teacher for you. He does not only give good grades to abstract artists. I don't create abstract art and I received an A in the class. Just listen to his advice and fix what he says and you'll do well!

INTERMEDIATE DRAWING- Like a couple others have said he likes abstract art. It seems like he grades your work based on what he personally likes instead of grading based on how well you met the criteria of the assignment. It's also true that everyone in the class starts to create abstract art just to please him and get a good grade.

Geoff is just an all-around cool guy. He genuinely wants to help each student grow as an artist, and therefor isnt afraid to tell you what he thinks. he IS a very modern artist, so if youre more of a representational artist, you might have a problem. Overall, if you have conception and effort behind your work, you'll do just fine!

Comment:
If you're not an abstract artist, don't expect him to like your art. He's all about modern art, expression through abstract. I have a very representative style to my art, and didn't start getting positive feedback until I made some abstract drawings. Everyone in the class ended up doing abstract crap just to please him. Waste of time, and effort.

The only people who don't like him are the people who expect a good grade without effort. Can be sarcastic and brutal when critiquing but it makes you a better artist. If you can't handle someone not telling you that your work is perfect and brilliant, get out of art school. He tells it like it is and knows exactly what he's talking about. awesome!

He may laugh at his own jokes but they are usually funny.Stays back enough in a beginning course to see what the student has to work with and then helps with weak areas. Best art teacher I've had here so far.Really tells you like it is and might critique pitiful work aloud. deal with it, its an art class, not everyone's perfect, some works are funny

Shockingly kind. Can't figure out the negative comments. Thoughtful and immensely talented artist. NIU has a lot of lazy art students and Geoffrey wants you to care as much as he does.
