If it's possible to take an English course with another professor, I would recommend doing so. I've never had an issue with an English course nor a professor in my entire life, but this professor was so unreasonable. Gave me failing grades for assignments completed on time (w/ no feedback) and doesn't respond to messages disputing this. Do not take

If u havent taken AP English in hs or u werent taught how to write an essay precisely, u wont flourish, but u will pass with a C if u submit every assignment. hes straightforward with the criteria. No late work. I took his online meetings class, he sends videos of ok feedback & has an office hour, still dont recommend if u suck at essays

I was nervous to take this class because of the reviews left but I loved it. If you reach out and ask questions you will receive great feedback. It was essay heavy but there were check-ins so it made it less stressful. Definitely one of my favorite professors and will teach you a lot about writing.

Professor Hoffman is a great professor! Took English 205 during COVID19 in the summer and, although it was a short & fast course, my essay writing skills and researching skills have significantly improved. His workload is completely manageable if you can stay organized and put in effort.

The class basically consists of a paper every week or two. Easy A if you try, but having to do them made me die inside. Also attendance is mandatory but you just sit there and suffer while he re-reads the same peer editing form for the fifth time this semester. I wouldnt take this class again, so proceed with caution

He is quite funny in his lectures. I took his course over the summer and enjoyed it, but you cant miss one class or you will fall behind. Also complete all the papers and tests. The papers are 50% of your grade and tests are 50%.

A very difficult professor. Can be confusing on what he wishes for the essays to be about. Essays can be tedious and very specific on the sources used (no use of newspapers and encyclopedias). If you miss a rough draft day or a peer edit day for an exam, you will lose a "participation grade". If you miss even just 3 you will be down a grade.

Classes are basically all lecture going over the assigned readings. He's a tough grader but he's fair and very clear with expectations on papers and exams. His jokes are dark, cynical, and witty so sometimes they go over your head but overall he's pretty funny. He gives great insight and prompts students to really think about the readings.

Hoffman has a dark sense of humor and repeats jokes a lot which can either make it enjoyable or annoy you. He is all about preparing you for University level writing so he does grade pretty hard. Definitely recommend building a relationship with him and getting on his good side. Put in the effort and you'll be fine.

He tries really hard to be funny. The class is lowkey boring. He gives really good feedback on essays and tells you exactly what to fix. I'm personally not a good writer, but managed to get an A, so it is not too hard.

I was weary of taking his class because of all the bad reviews I was seeing but I was pleasantly surprised that he wasn't as horrible as most people said he was. I think that most students just don't want to do all of the work he assigns. Sure he's tough, but he tell you exactly what he wants. Plus, he has a few good jokes.

A cynical man with a very rude disposition, I don't want to see this man again. He has talked about overweight people in class ad thought of it as humor. It is completely uncalled for. Please consider taking anyone but this guy if you have a busy schedule, he only likes his way and grades very rough, I had to drop the class because he is terrible.

I took Professor Hoffman's class as an 8 week summer course and it was terrible. I absolutely dreaded his class. Tells inappropriate "jokes" the whole class period and turns everything into some nasty sexual joke, even when it's not an actual part of the text... I would NOT recommend taking him, over 1/2 students who started the class dropped him.

I enjoyed his class so much that I would definitely take him again. He gives good feedbacks and he respects his students. Four essays for the entire semester, the last one will need a minimum of 3000 words. As long as you come to class and work for it, you would pass the class with no problem.

Prof. Hoffman's class is definitely not easy by any means, but I can honestly say that I am a better writer because of his class. You're going to have to work, and there is a lengthy paper due every couple weeks, but as long as you keep up with the interim deadlines, there should be no problem meating all the requirements.
