Meh. He gives a lot of weird abstract assignments. Once I pointed out a bunch of flaws in an essay we were reading and he told me I was right, but that he was going to "ignore that and continue to enjoy the essay." Kind of tough grader. Incomprehensible handwriting. Doesn't give many coments on drafts. That said he is always available to meet .

Good teacher, good class. He is really helpful and open to many ideas as long as they're supported. I think we wrote a new paper every week though, so stay on top of your reading. He's a fair grader. Overall, this is a nice way to finish the English requirement!

I really liked him. He is extremely helpful After every essay, he lets you assign yourself a time to meet him personally and work on the essay. He gives very useful comments and suggestions. He gives a lot of freedom with writing the essays as well which allow you to explore topics which truly interest you.

Prof Karlins is a tough grader, caring prof, off-beat guy, and overall good eng 1 prof. He assigns interesting readings and gives a lot of freedom in the papers. The discussions in class were also interesting and covers a huge variety of topics. He also writes children's books in his spare time.

Interesting man with great ideas. The class is a little scattered and he does tend to get scattered. He cares about improvement a lot, so you might not want to turn it up all the way too early.

Strange man. The readings and discussions are interesting, but the assignments are unclear, too broad, and arbitrary. He's a tough grader too, it's rare to get an A. But he's willing to meet and give help.

so spacey. but interesting classroom dynamic and conversation. helps student to think on the edge, but has a very unsystematic way of grading. easy to do well if you show improvement over the semester and if are creative with ideas.

Professor Karlins is a good guy, but is a pretty tough grader when it comes to essays. Grades against your own potential which is good in a way, but incredibly annoying if you want to pass out of English for the next semester.
