I had him for Linear Algebra back in the mid 80's (not sure of the course code at this point, so I guesses something in the 300's) since I was a junior/senior in computer science at the time. Excellent teacher. He even took me for a ride in his sailboat once!

Do not take this class unless you are prepared to spend countless time weekly in the math lab or with a tutor. By far the worst explainer of concepts I ever had for math. Made an A in this course only due to my determination to learn almost all the material of the course outside of class.

One of the best teachers in the math department! Dr. Karlof is so nice and helpful. Always has office hours and wants you to actually learn the material. If you're not going to try in class, don't expect a good grade. Definitely my favorite teacher! So sad he's retiring, thankfully he'll still be here in the falls only for 3 more years though!

Great professor with a good sense of humor. His tests are always fair and there are several quizzes that make up a test grade. In class examples are generally straight from the text, but Dr. Karlof gives some good alternative explanations and illustrations.

Very fun professor. Dr. Karlof does a great job of creating a relaxing atmosphere for a fairly difficult class. Abstract Algebra can be a bit tricky if you're coming in from a standard "Calc" background. Dr. Karlof does a great job of attuning his students to the new methods and thinking required.

They don't call it Abstract Algebra for nothing! The material is difficult and requires critical thinking, but if you study and put forth the effort you'll make a good grade. He gives generous curves. As far as Karlof goes, he is a trip. I thought he was hilarious. He makes a lot of mistakes, but if you ask questions you'll get through it.

Don't take this course unless you have previous experience with calculus. He isn't very good at explaining and I spent many days and nights teaching myself or in the math center getting help. However if you know the material it is easy to get a good grade. He also offers a bonus for good attendance!

He goes STRICTLY by the book. Very confusing to follow in class, but if you have specific questions, its best to go to office hours. If you want to understand the applications of this content, I would recommend another professor. Assumes prior knowledge, and skips multiple steps. BUT drops lowest exam score, &lowest quiz scores (2 sets of quizzes).

This is the hardest class I've ever taken, not made any easier by the professor. I tried to teach myself the info but the textbook is awful as well. Dr Karlof blazes through difficult to understand topics and left at least a few of us behind. 4 tests and 4 quizzes which make up a test grade.

Get ready to have your ears fudged* up... voice so irritating you will want to leave in the first 5 minutes. The only thing I like about this class is that the homework is not graded, because he gives a hell of a lot of it. Pick another teacher!

Very hard course - requires a lot of effort on the part of the student, but Dr. Karlof is always willing to help. He has introduced to me several unique and useful ways of thinking about probability. His examples come out of the book, so it is often better to follow along with the book rather than write them down. Tests are easier than homework.

He is a very nice guy and his class is fair. His tests only consist of exact example type problems and he gives partial credit. Take him if you can.

Had him for Calc 151 and was not hard at all. given a background in calc, you should have no problem getting an A. He stuck with the basics, even though he kind of left it up to you to teach yourself if you didnt understand.

SOOO hard! he's the nicest man ever! he just doesnt go into depth about calculus and expects you to already know every thing. He's always there to help. He makes little jokes every now and then which I thought were pretty funny. If youre really good at math and calculus he's the best teacher for you if not- try another prof.

Very good teacher, but extreamly boring. Gives homework assignments but then does most of it in class the next day. Not a very hard class, just does the basics. Doesn't go to in-depth about math topics.
