Comment:
Do not take his class, he does not even offer a clear rubric, the grading system is harsh. His instructions and his readings on bblearn conflicts what he says. Most students spend hours writing his one page paper only to end with low grade. His readings are hard to understand because of his style of talk. He is not helpful, he does not care.

Jay gets you to think. At the beginning of class he said he would not teach politics or religion. He doesn't directly do this, but his underlying themes of each lecture teach both. If you disagree with him ideologically he will shut you down, which sucks because college (and especially philosophy) is supposed to be an objective and tolerant place.

I've noticed other people say he tends to shut you down if you have a different opinion. I did notice this - and at one point he directly told me I couldn't talk anymore but apologized afterward - but I persisted and challenged him frequently in discussions, and we had some great discussions in class. Very fun class and pretty easy, too.

He's a great teacher if you have the same view as him... unfortunately if your beliefs or ideas stray from his formula then be prepared to be shut down.

This teacher really gets you to think. He said his class would not discuss politics or religion but nearly all of the readings and papers were something of the sort. Nice teacher, but shuts you down if you do not think the same way he does. Acts accepting of all ideas but his underlying tones, reactions, and facial expressions tell you otherwise

Comment:
Jay lets complete narcissists who simply want to hear their own voices run the discussion. If he doesn't think someones assessment of a concept is correct he just tells them no and continues over them. He complained about not being paid enough by the university but he is a glorified TA! He doesn't have the qualifications he ought to!

No textbook, fairly free-form lecturing style and curriculum. Frequent short papers but no major tests.

In his Buddhist Philosophy class there is a lot of writing. The class is mandatory, but it helps clarify the concepts. All in all a great class.

Jay is a really nice guy (a self proclaimed "left-over hippy"). I found him very easy to understand, even though philosophy is such a fluid concept. Watch out for all the papers he has you write. Just explain everything you say and you'll be fine. :)
