I took this class online and it was asynchronous. I had a pretty easy time with it and I was going into this class with very little experience. You definitely have to work hard on the projects. The projects can be a bit confusing at first but he gives very good feedback. Make sure to email him and make edits based on his feedback.

Rick is great at creating a stressful and demotivating working environment. Students are not allowed to talk to each other during class. Armed only with 28-year-old articles he printed off and cannot cite, youre left to teach yourself most of the material in the class. Rick only speaks to students to criticize work or answers to lecture questions.

Really helps you with one-on-one critiques to get your art to a point that will get it looking great and get you a good grade on it as well. He is a super friendly and approachable guy

Super nice guy, very hard grader. If you are not an art major DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I am taking this class as a gen ed and was very proud of my paintings. I was told by him that it's based off of how well you can paint. I've spent $500 on supplies. I can't drop it and I have a C+.

Rick was a super nice teacher, and he'll give you tons of feedback on each of your projects. It will take time and a lot of editing, but you'll end up with a great piece of art after he fine-tunes everything. However, sometimes there will be a lot of stuff due on the same day so try to work on things in advance

Friendly guy and extremely critical. You will be assigned to do batches of 20-30 different versions per assignment and you will be revising the same ones for weeks before turning it in. Even after revising, it does not guarantee an A. He does critiques thoroughly on one-on-ones, but sometimes he won't make it to you even after 2 and a half hours.

Really did not enjoy his class. Made me feel dumb at times or would skip me when I needed help. Sometimes he was okay and nice. Has favorites. Wish I took his course with someone else, his teaching style wasnt helpful for me.

He kinda works like a really difficult customer when it comes to turning in projects. You work on them for weeks, he tells you he doesn't like them and to revise them 800 times, but in the end you have a great piece of work for your portfolio. One of my favorite professors.

He is such a nice guy that its hard to talk bad about him, but he's really not a great professor. He's extremely unclear on everything. Although its nice that he's unclear on deadlines because he always pushes them back. He tends to only focus his attention on one or two students so you don't get feedback from him. Also extremely repetitive

Once you understand Gestalt principles and what he's looking for the class gets easy. But until then it can be challenging. As long as you try and attempt to understand design principles you should be okay.

This was for Drawing II in the summer. I would highly recommend taking this in the summer. Rick was very helpful and the class was so laid back. He let you redo things and also looked at your overall portfolio for grading at the end, along with each individual assignment. You get the class done fast and have time to focus and create better work.

Rick is a talker, especially when you ask for help. If you don't show up or ask for help, expect a poor grade. He tells you what needs more work and lets you fix it before you turn it in for a final grade. He's super friendly, but expect homework. Don't procrastinate, you will not survive the class if you do.

After reading some of the reviews about Professor Weis, I was nervous to take his class. However, I'm glad I did. He knows what he's talking about and is always available for critique (which is extremely helpful). A's on projects are hard to come by, but if you work hard it will pay off at the end of the semester. I would take him again.

Rick's a talker... super nice, but the class is kind of hard. Sometimes the projects are confusing. To figure out what he wants just keep asking him about your work.

Rick is a pleasant is rather verbose prof. He explains everything multiple times so there is no chance of confusion. Going to class is mandatory, however you are not marked down as long as you sign the attendance sheet. He will give critiques during any class so as long as you turn up and show him your work until he accepts it you will get an A.

His projects were challenging for me, but he always helped me with any questions & was open-minded with his feedback. Aside from teaching the class he was always very available for questions about the GVSU art program even though he wasn't my advisor. I noticed the people that had a hard time in his classes were people that hardly ever showed up.

I have no idea what everyone is whining about with Rick. I am a non-studio major who took intro to drawing with Rick and he was incredibly helpful and understanding; he graded how hard I worked, not how good I was (which was not very). I'm taking another class with him because I liked him so much. He's laid back and friendly and buys you pizza.
