Three assignments due every unit: Historical Thinking, annotations, discussion. Tests are like historical thinking assignments. Recommend emailing him drafts of your assignment so he can give you feedback before you turn it in. Tough grader, wants creativity, effort, and realistic situations. Annotations should take topic further.

Professor Lawler is an understanding professor and has super interesting lectures. The class is based off textbook annotations, discussion posts, and historical thinking questions. It can be a lot if you leave the assignments to the last minute, but I think they're pretty reasonable. He grades super quick too. Exams are free response.

Great professor. He graded everything super fast and gave feedback every time. It's not the easiest of A's but very possible. I took him for winter session and the class went by so fast. Not much work, just a lot of reading. No exams just 1 final paper that's only 1-2 pages.

I took this class during the 2020-2021 Winter session. The class wasn't assignment heavy so I was able to fully enjoy my Winter break. The reading material comes from a free textbook and Lawler had very easy to understand lectures which made the class a breeze. All his expectations are clear and he is very easy to reach out to for questions.

Deviated from past curriculums for a game design project that the entire semester is based around. We barely spoke about American history, and only given a handful of assignments. I feel like he has approached this class as a game designer, rather than a history teacher- which doesn't help a class full of different majors.

Entirely unclear grading criteria. You cannot require more to be completed than has definitively been required in the assignment profile. I am an A student and completed every assignment thoroughly, attended every class, participated, and did more than required and was still docked 20%. Makes no sense. Also, the class is entirely self taught.

I'm not the best student, I tend to do just enough to get by and Lawler's class was super easy for me, never really showed up to class but studied when it was time for an exam. Only 2 exams and a page paper due about every other Sunday night.

this class is terrible and my entire class would agree! He may be nice but he can't teach for his life. You will spend the entire class doing research and designing a game. The most boring lectures I have ever been in. You will not learn anything. Everything is self taught. Might as well purchase a history book and teach yourself.

TRUST ME!!! DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. He takes forever to respond to emails and is not the most helpful. Not a normal class, you teach yourself all the history by reading the textbook i think he lectured maybe once, maybe. The entire class is based off of designing a game, LOTS OF WORK, YOU DON'T LEARN MUCH, VERY BORING, VERY TIME CONSUMING

Its basically a self taught class since he probably talks about American history once in his class. The rest of the time he spends taking about sources and making a game. I did not sign up to build a game because you like games. You teach yourself all of history by reading the textbook and doing annotations. He is terrible at responding to emails.

this is defiantly the worse class I have ever taken in my college experience. He has completely changed his curriculum from the previous reviews so disregard those. The whole class is centered around designing a game since he loves games. It is so much harder than it seems. His instructions are not clear. I have to send 8 emails before he responds.

Taking this class over winter session was rigorous, yet very rewarding. The class is only 4 weeks long, so the deadlines are tight. However, Prof. Lawler makes the workload manageable, with 6 modules each consisting of book annotations, a quiz, and historical thinking. No exams, but one 750 word paper at the end which wasn't too bad.

Lawler is an amazing professor who is extremely knowledgeable, he's a funny guy and if you love history you'll love him. Every week you have annotations to do based on the readings provided, they aren't hard just tedious if you put them off. Only had to write one paper and it was for the final exam, overall a very interesting course.

Professor Lawler did an amazing job teaching California history. The lectures are all super interesting, even more so are the readings. There's quite a few of them you have to do with annotations, but overall none of the work is too hard and Lawler explains everything in a way that's easy to understand

The textbook is online and is free. You are not required to go to his lectures, but you are required to go to your Historical Thinking groups to do his assignments (every 2 weeks; 6 meetings in total). All you need for his 2 exams are in his lectures, but his lectures can be boring. Reading is not required but is recommended. Overall pretty chill.

You literally don't need to attend his lectures but just attend the Historical Thinking meetups to get the points you need. It felt like a waste of time going to his lectures being bored, but he is a very funny guy. Good professor, makes jokes, and tries to make his lectures fun.

as a liberal studies major, many people warned his class would be challenging, but it wasn't that bad! as long as u read a lot & write well you'll be fine! graded by few things & tests are all essays. requires a lot of reading material :/ but provides exact study guides for exams. a funny guy & will provide good help if u need it!

Prof Lawler is a nice guy, and considering I am a history major and finished the rest of my courses with A's except this one class was really frustrating. His essay prompts are deliberately vague and feedback was almost non-existent, so it was hard to understand what was met on assignments (he does not return essays, just gives you a grade online):

Comment:
This class goes deep into history and you have to be ready to read a lot. He grades a bit tough and expects a lot from the free response questions on his tests. He really expects you to know history well and explain it with concrete details. He tends to go off topic at times which can be hard to keep up with. Hes very sarcastic and funny though.
