I've had Torsten for multiple courses over the time of the pandemic, and although he might not be the most tech-savvy of profs he definitely makes up for it in passion and knowledge. His courses have been very flexible and forgiving given the pandemic. Even through an online format I can easily see why people consider him amazing in-person too

While Torsten's teaching strategies do not translate well to the online medium, just as he cuts students a ton of slack, the same understanding should be returned to him. He has some interesting insights and is pretty darn funny too. Yes he was unstructured but he gave us freedom with our writing and we only had to write a few things. Great prof

Had about 3 assignments total (2 papers and a suspense journal). Students weren't giving clear grading criteria for assignments and the grades given back were just letter grades rather than a percentage. Although, he gives lots of good feedback on papers, is a fair marker, and genuinely seems like he wants his students to receive a good mark.

Torsten is a good professor and cares about his students. However, it was very hard to contact him and we had no set lectures. He was unorganized this semester and hopefully, he gets better with the online schooling.

From what I've seen here, I'm sure Torsten is great when he's doing in-person classes. This semester was all online, and it seemed like he made no effort to adapt his course to an online format. I didn't hear from him on canvas until week 3 and didn't post any lectures until the last few weeks of class. I would not recommend him if it's online.

Torsten is an expert in his craft. Funny. Friendly. Approachable. A Fair grader. Gives great feedback (but feedback does get returned a bit late). Lecture heavy, but he always welcomes questions / comments. Only had a few things I got graded for in the course. I would highly recommend him. He is an awesome professor who shows that he really cares.

The best prof I've had at SFU. A genuine nice person with a good sense of humor which makes even Shakespeare tolerable. Would take any class he is teaching because I believe that the way he teaches actually makes all the material sensible. Is very understanding that Shakespeare is tough and chooses the best plays to study.

Best prof ever. I never wanted to miss class because lectures were so entertaining. He somehow made Shakespeare interesting and I learned a lot. Be warned he doesn't have a syllabus and doesn't use canvas, if you like that kind of thing. Super chill and fun. 100% recommend.

Taken multiple classes with Torsten, this man is a legend. You don't have to attend his lectures to pass but his humour, caring attitude, and great knowledge of the subject matter make you never want to miss class. I would 100% recommend Torsten for any of the classes he teaches, he is a great professor

Torsten was such a great prof, I loved his lectures! He did a great job bringing some of the duller readings to life! He is very knowledgeable and I will definitely be taking more classes with him. Don't be afraid to ask him with thesis statements because he is very particular about them!

Torsten is a good prof, however he can be very boring. His seminars are just him lecturing without giving you the chance to talk, so essentially you have 4 hours of lecture a week. That being said, he is sometimes funny and is a fair marker. The essays are easy enough to get done if you just read the plays and know how to write.

I just took 111W and it was a really fun class. Torsten is a hilarious prof who explains concepts well. His exam questions were very straight forward, as long as you pay attention in class, you'll do well on the final.

Avoid him with all the cost. Always late to the lecture and exam is illogical. Should not be a prof at any education organization.

Probably one of the best profs in the English department. Torsten is truly passionate about the material he teaches, which leaves each lecture enjoyable. His sense of humour makes 4 hour lectures bearable and he genuinely cares about his students. Fair marker and incredibly lenient with assignment dates.

He is the best of the best. I cannot stress this enough. Torsten is the funniest and loveliest profs I have ever had. He made the most excruciating material enjoyable because of his amazing personality and insight, not to mention humour. He is a very fair marker. This is the only class I've had where you soak up the material and discuss it well.

A once in a lifetime teacher. You will actually look forward to class every week. Includes really interesting stuff to read into his syllabus and possess a lot of knowledge about the subject matter. He was also really funny and kept lectures engaging all of the time. You will want to recommend him to everyone (as I'm doing now).

He is very funny in lectures and treats his students well. He is very unorganized which sometimes became frustrating. He did 4 mini essays and a term paper which were all totally fair. Exam was extremely fair if you went to class and paid attention. No syllabus or lecture slides which isn't really my style but overall would recommend
