Comment:
A super friendly and knowledgeable guy but he is not good at teaching or creating a curriculum. Even for a theory-based course, he assigned a huge amount of reading (at least 3 readings averaging at about 70 pages) every week. His lectures are also often rambling and longer than necessary. He has not adjusted well to the online format.

He is obviously a very intelligent and nice man. But he is just not a good teacher. Pace is bad, explanation is bad, slides are not clear. Maybe he is better at teaching courses that are more verbal and less mathematical. but definitely avoid him for 314.

Gives 100's of pages of reading a week starting from the 18th century. Try to at least read some of it, but all? Impossible with multiple classes. Also, long assignments on complex material. He at least he tried to get excited. Going into the final exam. Expected to have read all material. Good luck to me.. brain dead.. stopped caring...

He is an intelligent, happy, kind, fair, and enthusiastic professor. I appreciated the fact that as a political science professor he wasn't pushing a left-wing agenda on the class, and was actually rather fair to all ideas. However he does have a tendency to ramble and the lectures can begin to feel very long. Overall, I'd recommend him.

I learned a lot in this class, it was an interesting class, just a little hard. He expects a lot from students. If I got a very good mark is because I worked hard, that's all we have to do in his class.

Very Knowledgeable, for his age he makes an effort to use technology in his lectures (pp/youtube...) Spends most of his time making ivory tower econ jokes to blank disinterested faces. If you show interest and do readings you will get a A+, easiest paper marker, final exam is typical poli sci exam. Do not take unless interested in Political Economy

Not sure why there are so many negative reviews. Laurent is super interesting. All his class requires is memorization of the readings and regurgitation. You can pick a handful of weeks to focus on and do pretty well. It's one of those classes where you get as much or as little as you want out of it. No participation mark for shy people.

the absolute worst. I'm certain nobody worked harder than myself but was not rewarded fairly. As dry and boring as any human being possible. HORRIBLE!!! avoid at all costs.

Awesome prof. I dare any of the haters to move to France and teach game theory and rational choice in French. As a marker, he will reward workers, punish whiners. This course is not required, and you'll learn more from 5 minutes of letting him speak than in a day of readings. Give this man a digital whiteboard!

Comment:
This man is utterly incomprehensible and does not belong in the department. The positive comment below forgets that political science isn't meant to be a science: it is a social science. Attempts to quantify everything simply remove any sense of critical thinking from the discourse, and Dobuzinskis definitely suffers from this.

Do not listen to these comments. Laurent is a kind and wonderful man and a freakin' genius. Yes, the course is hard. It is one of the only truly scientific courses in the discipline. If you're in poli sci to take the LSAT, take something else. If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

He is a good professor. He is an objective academic that does not reward pandering. If you make insightful inquiries, even if you disagree with him, he WILL mark you objectively. If you are really interested in the subject matter, you should try a course with him.

I agree he doesn't explain things well. And for this course you have to study. But, the exams are graded objectively, not subjectively due to the subject matter. Also he comes across as a nice guy, Im not sure if this has changed but he's nice and certainly not a hard ass. More lamb than lion.

In 3 words: Human sleeping pill. Very hard to understand, unorganized, and typical hard ass prof from the movies. Don't take him if you don't have to, just buy the book and read it, you will learn more than spending a few hundred bucks on this prof. He is extremely partisan about his views and not afraid to show it.

It was really more of a propaganda session than a class. Can be confusing at times. Not a very enjoyable experience for those of us who happen to not subscribe to the "We Love Neoliberalism" newsletter, or "Gordon Campbell Monthly".

Not bad...easy midterm, bit tougher final (more questions). Easily impressed on essay, if you're decent and clear writer. Participation not heavily factored, doesn't remember anyone. If you can sit thru his dull lectures you can get a B atleast
