His lectures can be used as a sedative. His grading requirements are not explained until after you passed your paper in. He has the personality of a comatose hippo. Despite this, it is a pretty laid-back class and is not a whole lot of work. If you can somehow read his mind and know what he wants on a paper, it is a fine class. Otherwise, no.

This is the hardest class I have taken. He mostly concentrates on food. Your grade depends on 3 quizzes and 3 exams. His class is very monotonic. Unless you are a great test-taker and memorizer this class won't be pleasant. Prof. Montrie literally missed class for more than 2 weeks.

Way too hard of a grader, got a much lower grade deserved. Got the lowest grade of the semester in this class, yet I put more work in than most other classes.

Great Professor. Be ready to read and be ready to write. 3 essays dominate your grades. Classes are usually lectures.

This class REALLY stressed me out. Very unclear instructions for assignments. You could write everything he asks for in an essay, and it's still somehow "not what he was looking for" & your grade suffers. The entire class (except for one) had to redo an assignment because they were "awful" and "not what he was looking for." Avoid at all costs.

Definitely would not recommend taking this professor. He is a very hard grader and super condescending. If you complete an assignment and think you did good, think otherwise. You'd be lucky to receive a B at the highest on any essay or exam. If you have to take this class or any history class, I'd recommend taking it with another professor.

He gives little to no guidance for assignments and expects students to just know what hes looking for. Expects a ridiculous amount of work to be completed at the end of the semester, and doesnt have any regard that youre in other classes. Lectures are bland. He gives random grades with little real feedback. Is incredibly condescending.

I've taken this Prof twice now, I myself find history very interesting, Montrie has a way of making it terribly boring and focuses on things he mainly finds were interesting in history at the time (not interesting). Does not provide a copy of the slides to study for the tests, which are written essays that he grades with no feedback. Difficult.

This was a World War II class and it seemed to have little to do with the war at all. When grading essays little feedback was given and one could say he asks a lot in these assignments but good luck finding out what.

Excellent Professor, I enjoyed His1960 a lot! He expects a lot of work from his students but he also is always around to help with any questions. I would take another class with him.

I took the same class as the previous poster and I disagree completely. Montrie is a social historian and therefore focuses on the people rather than the minutia of battle and wartime scenarios. If you want a class about war, this isn't for you. Instead it focuses on the imperial takeover by the French and the lasting repercussions in the region.

I took prof. Montrie for the class the history of the war in Vietnam. while this is the name of the class all the material we covered had little to no relation to the wars in Vietnam. The majority of the material we covered was before the war focusing on France's colonial control of Indochina. no mention of any wartime events such as tet offensive.

Grades like a college Professor should. Excellent lectures. If you write a college level paper and can read 4-5 books and can participate in class you should do just fine. If your a slacker, or want an easy A, you probably should look elsewhere. This is a college level class, not high school. Would definitely take another class from him.

Took his making historical documentary class. I'm a film maker by career. He literally thinks he knows EVEYRTHING! Might be able to tell you a lot about the history of documentary film, but he knows NOTHING about post, and wants everyone to think he's God. Looks down on people, and is very demanding. Obviously doesn't enjoy teaching at all.

Overall a good professor. Supposed to read 4 books and watch 4 films. I didn't read the books but watched 2 films and was fine. Takes attendance unannounced (usually on days when you discuss the books/movies). Two 6-8 page papers and one 8-10 (the final). If you can write a good history paper you're all set. Wouldn't mind taking him again.

If you enjoy the following historical topics (in U.S. context), you'll like him: women, Indians, immigration, labor, environment. If not, then he is pretty dull and one-dimensional. Had him for Historical Methods...Demanding, with pointless assignments, but it wasn't totally unreasonable...Not a bad guy if you show a commitment to his class...

Comment:
Regarding upper level History classes: Great topics, great lecture, great required reading. If you are passionate about history you will love any of his classes. Very knowledgable about labor and enviromental and US history, his dry sense of humor is a riot too even if 95% of the class.
