Participation is a HUGE part of your grade, so if you don't like to talk, don't take his class because you'll be marked way down because you don't participate. Students responsible for leading discussion-starts each class with "What do you want to talk about today?" However, he is a very intelligent guy and very nice. You'll learn a lot from him.

Years after my experience at Trinity, my classes with Prof Kuyk stand as those that improved my writing, reading, and critical thinking skills. Very helpful outside of the classroom. He is the most intelligent man I have ever met.

I've taken six courses with Kuyk because he is one of the very few teachers who make you work and think for your grade. I hate kids who BS their way through college and love to see them targeted in his classes. He will absolutely improve your writing, reading, and critical thinking abilities. TAKE HIS CLASS.

Dirk, once I was able to swallow my ego, proved to be the most profound influence on my writing and enjoyment of literature at Trinity. Though not for the feint of heart, the true English scholar would do well to work him into the Trinity experience.

He teaches literature from the inside out, disregarding the dishonest symbolic, anything goes approach. He makes you work like a private detective to reach an objective conlusion, if such exists. I took an evening graduate class i som e twenty years ago and he remains one of the finest teachers i have had. He reads papers honestly

Far and away the best that Trinity's english department has to offer . . . As others have already stated, this is not the professor to take if you are looking to skate by. However, if you are actually interested in actually getting something out of your $30k he's your man.

Brilliant man, has a lot to offer and makes u think but tends to let class wander off topic. Half of the time don't actually talk bout the reading. He is a hard grader and don't even try to BS your way through papers cus u'll regret it. He expects a lot from students.

I took Faulkner with Kuyk... I was really intimidated by him at first but he's the best. He really likes to hear all ideas and encourages debate and he is so smart, and also tells hilarious stories. He's difficult, but well worth the effort.

Yo, back off Dutch! Professor Kuyk is the man. He's funny, engaging, and demands a lot from you. But, if you do the reading, put thought and creativity into your comments, and actually SHOW that you have done the work and been creative, you will be fine. Plus, he's very accessible outside of class.

The man was the bane of my existence for four awful months. It's not the course work that's killer, it's his grading. So harsh and you dont even know what's happening till it's too late! He always says "be interesting"...the man is boring as hell. Stay away if you actually care about your grades.
