One of the most exciting profs at UBC. He actually makes you think about what you are learning and applies it to midterm and final questions. Stubborn and hard-headed at times, he is overall one of the best profs I've had in my 5 years at UBC.

The class was completely asynchronous, which was a blessing and a curse. If the quizzes were not tied to the textbook it wouldn't be necessary. My second mid term got canceled(because they rightfully banned proctorio the day before) and the weight got shifted to the final. His midterm and final exams are very theory based and all multiple choice.

Entertaining and informative lectures. Excellent at explaining MOST concepts. On some occasions his explanations for topics may be confusing, but the textbook remedies this to an extent by offering other ways of explaining. His tests are on the easier side and are multiple choice. If you stay on top of readings and study, you'll do well.

Prof G is an absolute GEM. GREAT prof, GREAT lectures, GREAT sense of humor, fairly easy exams ( people say his exams used to be way more difficult but now they're really easy if you ACTUALLY study)

I took this course online and asynchronous. He only ever made multiple choice questions for exams, felt a bit lazy from his side. He uses Proctorio against the will of students... He explains things rather confusingly...

Clearly knowledgable and passionate about the subject. Personal preference, but I found his prerecorded lectures difficult to sit through as they were 2+ hours each. Textbook helps a lot. Tests were very difficult and really tests your ability to apply teachings rather than regurgitating info. Hardly answers questions properly during exam reviews.

His lectures are full of dark humour! Although they're tough to understand, a little help from outside resources helped me through this course.

Makes Econ unnecessarily hard. I had an A in AP Microeconomics in high school, this had the same content but the Gateman's exams test how well you understand the question rather than how well you understand the concept itself. I will NEVER take his class again because of the sheer lack of engagement and unenthusiasm. Self-study and you will pass.

He is incredibly knowledgeable about the subject and that clearly shows in his lectures. They are engaging and well structured. Heard a lot of rumours about him coming into the course, but honestly didn't notice anything weird. Solid dude.

You need to be incredibly soft to complain about the G mans teaching. His lectures are solid, his exams are fair, and his courses are interesting. Simple as that.

Gateman explains econ concepts very well and his lectures are very easy to understand. However his (online) lectures can be very boring as he goes over content too slowly sometimes. Overall solid choice for econ courses

Before I took this class, I heard he was not a good prof and I should witch out, however after finishing the semester, I can't tell why I was told this. He explains the concepts well and cares about students learning. His lectures can be boring at times, but if you take good notes, skim the textbook and think critically, this course will be great.

Cool guy! for my online class it was asynchronous lectures and quizzes that made up the most of my learning. His format really worked for me! I learned a ton. midterm/final was very fair too. Just make sure you stay on top of lectures.

At the beginning of the term he posted pre recorded lecture videos, around 2-3 hours each, on Canvas and every weak made one available to view. And that's the class! So boring, really ruined what could be an interesting course. No homework, just one group project with vague instructions the whole class did poorly on.

His lectures are decent but due to it being online my interaction with him was minimal. The questions in exams did not accurately represent the calibre of questions in the mylab econ study plan and it was a whole lot of self learning. It was the worst online course I've taken. So much for inclusivity and understanding with exams at midnight.

Despite a potentially easier online class, Gateman was not engaged with students at all. His responses to emails were dry and never actually answered questions. An actual response was "Great question ask your TA". He also did not make it clear what we were going to be tested on and hid our midterm questions so that we could only see grades.

I love Gateman. I used to hate Economics when I took it in high school, but Gateman's lectures are so interesting they really left me with a better grasp of the subject. Everyone complains about him, but if you watch his lectures, read the e-text religiously, and practice on MyEconLab, I'm sure you'll leave this class with an A+, just like I did.

Comment:
Gateman ensures that his lectures are interesting and engaging by using examples of his addiction to Coke. For someone who has never done ECON before, I can say that his lectures really teach you the concepts and helps in understanding the difficult parts through simplification. To do well in his class, you have to do lots of practice on mylab.
