Prof. Owens is absolutely amazing. He is super knowledgeable. Some of the labs and test can be tough but there are plenty of opportunities to make up for lower grades with other assignments, and he's a pretty lenient grader. He loves to crack jokes and his students love him. Doesn't teach right out of the textbook but he does reference it.

Owens is my new favorite professor. He is very caring and allows students to explore areas in geology that they are interested in. There is a lot of writing and presentations, but none were too stressful and Owens was always willing to help. He's passionate about the subject and clearly cares for each individual student too. Highly recommend!

I loved class with Prof Owens this semester. He made class fun and I have learned a lot. He is a self proclaimed easy grader and that is definitely true. I was never stressed about turning in an assignment. We also had no tests or quizzes which was great! If you need a coll150 take it with him if you can!

Reading the Earth is a really fun COLL 150. Prof Owens does a good job keeping the material accessible to non-geology majors and in general is a really nice guy. There are a lot of papers, but none are too long. I had a good time!

Professor Owens is just a great guy. If you are a freshmen and do not not what coll 150 class to take do this one (even if you are not interested in geology at all). It's not too much work and will not stress you out. Sometimes the readings were a little dry, but professor Owens make the classes fun.

There are 5 short papers(3-4 pages), 1 book review on your choice(4 pages), and 1 final research paper on your topic(10-12 pages) to write. There are also 3 presentations: national park(group), book review, and final research, which are super easy and chill. Go to his office hours and talk about these! You will love it! Also 2 cool field trips!

Take this class! Reading the Earth is a super laid back but interesting class even if you know nothing about geology. Professor Owens gives great feedback and lets you choose most of your paper topics. Not too stressful and a great, understanding teacher!

Most of the class is a bunch of papers, but they are relatively easy and he gives really good feedback on the drafts. The course is really fun even if you know absolutely nothing about geology. Professor Owens is just a cool dude, super kind and obviously likes teaching.

One of the best professors ever! Brent is probably the most hilarious professor ever. He makes mineralogy do-able and fun. Strongly recommended.

Brent is great. He's really funny and makes his class interesting. I love just talking with him. That said, he will often assign problems on the problem sets that are MILES above the complexity he went over in class. It is also sometimes difficult to determine what parts of his lectures are pertinent and what parts are fluff. Great prof.

Doc Otis is a great professor. However, when it comes to showing us the material that will be on the problem sets he often glazes over the pertinent information or uses very simple examples whereas the problem sets have comprehensive problems. That said, he is ALWAYS available to give help, and he is very funny.

I took the freshman seminar "Reading the Earth" with Brent. He was such a chill professor. The class was very easy and very fun, despite the fact that I have little interest in geology. A couple field trips too. Don't take this as a class to learn a lot about geology though.

Brent's an awesome guy. He makes mineralogy less painful than it could be with corny jokes and references to himself in the third person as "Doc Otis." Tests were a bit difficult, but the final has almost two pages of great little extra credit questions. Study and you'll do well!

Brent is a really nice guy who really tries hard and is very approachable. He makes Mineralogy as painless as it could be. However, he could benefit from using powerpoints instead of overheards. If you aren't good with memorization you may have a hard time - like me - but stick it out and you will be surprised by your final grade

I went into mineralogy with apprehension because of my hatred for chemistry. HOWEVER - Brent pleasantly surprised me and this has been my favorite geology class EVER. Geo majors have to take this, but don't you worry. Brent makes the subject terrific and he's got plenty of jokes up his sleeve.

Brent is awesome. He sings a lot during class and makes incredibly corny jokes. Once he recited a poem beginning, "A Mineral is a Wonderous Thing". Take Mineralogy. He makes rotoinversion axes interesting.
