I read a few of these comments beforehand and they had me pretty worried about taking Professor Varghese's class, but it turned out to not be an issue. She's really nice and tries to make herself available to students. Overall, if you get her, don't fret!

Comment:
Professor Varghese is not only quite a tedious lecturer, she also is quite a biased grader, inflecting her own personal opinions into the grade. Unapproachable in many aspects, and unwilling to accept converging points of view. She feels the need to assert her authority at times that seem inappropriate. Think carefully before taking her class.

Really torn. She was obviously really smart and knew what she was talking about. On the other hand she was kind of personally unhelpful and intimidating. I felt like she had certain things she was looking for and preferred opinions that were like hers. I don't think she is boring or too soft-spoken, just better in a conversational class setting.

The readings tend to be long and boring, and class is not all that interesting either. She is very nice and willing to talk to you (during office hours). I was really interested in anthropology before this class (it was my intended major) and after this class i chose another major--might have just been the information though.

She is not open minded about issues for someone who is an anthropology specialist. Her analysis and arguments on issues are incomprehensible and backwards and her lack of respect for dissent makers her immature.

Comment:
This class was the worst class I've ever taken at Vassar. She was bad at leading discussions, and she was very close-minded and sort of ignorant about certain cultures which made lectures very awkward and uncomfortable for me. She also seems to have favorites in the class which is annoying.

Completely unable to lead class discussions or lecture intelligently. Rarely even speaks loud enough for those in back to hear. Comments on papers do not provide useful information for improving. This class seemed as if she was fighting the students for control of classroom, something I thought would end with high school.

Linta is one of my favorite professors. Her classes are a lot of work, but afterwards I realize I learned a lot as well. She is shy, which can make discussions awkward, but in small classes she forces you to think.

Comment:
I think people have been overly unfair to Linta. She IS soft-spoken. She WILL admit that she doesn't know EVERYthing that needs to be taught as that is not her speciality. She CAN get bland sometimes. But she is really nice if you talk to her. Ok so she won't do marvels for your GPA. But otherwise, she's really helpful and really knows HER stuff.

Comment:
Do not, under any circumstances, ever, EVER take a course taught by this woman. Class is a serious health liability, meaning that it makes me want to kill myself three times a week. She is incapable of leading a discussion or giving a coherent lecture. Texts are dull and irrelevant. Do not waste your time, there is nothing to be learned from Linta.

Comment:
Do not take a class with this professor. She is absolutely unable to lead discussion, is slow replying to emails, expects graduate-school level work, is impossible to please, gives bad grades, boring texts, useless assignments, etc.
