Mike is the man. Hands down the greatest writing teacher I've ever had. Very well informed about the publishing business and treats his students as serious writers. Gives helpful criticism and ALWAYS has praise to offer as well. Take every class this man teaches.

Great prof, great guy. Serious about his stuff, not afraid to voice his opinion, but does his best to be encouraging across the board in this intro to fiction writing course. Solid open dialogue in workshops, encouraged quality discussions, and utilized texts surprisingly well. One of the best at Emerson, definitely take a class with him.

TAKE ANYTHING YOU CAN WITH THIS MAN. Mike is the best teacher I have had yet. When workshopping, he always makes sure to say something positive, and always tries to ground any criticisms in specific details-he tells you exactly what he wants, but isn't a **** about it at all. On the contrary, he loves giving praise and is always nice and humorous.

My best 8:00AM in three semesters at Emerson. One of the rare professors that is able to successfully encourage group discussion without it being awkward; all 16 of us are more or less friends now. And since he doesn't believe in the grading system, you're guaranteed at least a B- if you don't miss too much.

I love Mike. He's by far the best writing teacher I've had. He's fair, he doesn't interrupt students, his workshops are insightful, and he really taught us a lot about the writing/publishing business. He's incredibly nice and very interested in his students and their work. He's honest, but NEVER mean. I would take his class again in a heartbeat.

Great professor. He's a published writer so he really knows what he's talking about, and it was great to learn the tricks of the trade from him. At the same time, he's also very down-to-earth and easy to talk to. His critiques are helpful and honest, and I like the way he conducted the workshops.

Gives clear feedback on stories, has a good sense of humor, encourages the right kind of discussions, isn't pretentious, can help the worst and best writers, gives good exercises, and finds even the smallest details that can improve a story. Great class. He definitely helped me improve my writing.
