Comment:
While Grella's teaching was entertaining at times and it was definitely apparent that he's an extremely intelligent person, he is extremely harsh. I got a D on my first essay, but as long as you meet with him, you can improve a ton (went up three letter grades on the next one.) I learned a lot from him. Don't take this class if you're sensitive.

Great movies, terrible professor. Avoid Grella at all costs!!! His grading is completely random and not based on any actual rubric. His lectures are a waste of time, reading the movie's wikipedia page would give you the same knowledge.

While a brilliant professor, he has the tendency to be harsh as hell. Especially in his grades. If you're expecting a professor to hand out A's easily, he's not the professor for you.

The man is brilliant. He is a vault of knowledge, and the books are very good. He is a very tough grader who grades heavily on grammar and sentence structure. I learned a lot in the class, but he can shoot down your ideas in class. His "meanness" is misunderstood and can be funny in my opinion.

Worst professor I've ever had. Is VERY picky about writing and will give you whatever final grade he thinks appropriate, regardless of what grades you've actually received. Mean-spirited. Says the same thing over and over again.

Gangster Films: Avoid this man. The hardest grader I have encountered at U of R, he loves to give out 'D's and 'F's, but if you suck up to him you can get by with a passing grade. It does NOT matter if you are a good writer, he is super opinionated and will give you what ever he wants. Great topic, great movies, awful professor.

Without a doubt the worst professor I ever had. I have regretted taking a class with him every day. The only reason I haven't dropped his class is because I'm also in another class with him and can't drop one because then I know he'd take it out on me in the other and I can't drop both or else I'd lose my financial aid. Don't ever take his classes

I registered for his course after the first day of class and emailed him asking for the syllabus so I could catch up by the next class. His email back and our short-lived further correspondence was not welcoming at all. I have since transferred into another course and am so glad I do not have to deal with any more of his rude remarks.

Taking this class ruins my day every time. He is a pompous ****, an impossible grader, completely unhelpful and in my opinion pretty ****. He fancies himself to be some kind of Hemingway hero but in reality he's just a sad old man. He sucks, avoid him at all costs.

Terrible. Person transferred in on the second day of classes, and he ran her down about missing the first week. His "radical new teaching style" consists of watching a movie and talking about it for 5-10 minutes.

Taking his course is self-torture. I was slightly amused by his attacks on the right-wing and stories of his youth. Then I got my first after spring break and the grade was horrible. Grades on grammar and his personal concept of style. Cuts of views different from his own as well. Don't be late to his class.

I genuinely dislike him, both as a person and a teacher. He does nothing to facilitate an open dialogue. Rather he cuts off views different from his own, and goes out of his way to try to make his students feel belittled and incompetent. If you are interested in being abused and having his opinions alone, shoved down your throat then take his cl

I love this guy. He's very funny and basically spends most of class telling stories about his life and writing. In this class we had only 4 assignents, just 2-page essays. He did not really give any feedback on them or put grades on them, so I don't know how I am doing in the class. Even if I fail I had a lot of fun with him as a professor.

He's old school. Mandatory attendance, and a grammar freak. Though a tough grader, he will work with you to improve your writing and let you rewrite papers if necessary. Articulate, informed, and dynamic, he's the best genre studies professor at the university.

He's definetly a pompous ass, which is part of what I like about him. I like the way he runs class ... basically you watch a movie and then discuss it after. He's a tough grader, focusing more on grammar than content. He's very self-centered and hard to persuade. Teaches very interesting classes, so I'd say it's worth it overall.

I had him for films of the 60's. He more or less talked about his escapades with friends in the 60's. He does not look at an essay and see its true content. Instead, he looks at who the person is, and give them what grade he thinks they should have. Don't take him unless you emanate that brainy vibe.

We're reading the most amazing books (Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Faulkner), and he only goes over PLOT. If we go over the books at all. If you ask questions beyond plot, he says you're overreading it. I hate you Grella!
