Professor Carr is hard, but is truly a fantastic professor of philosophy. She has a specific way that she wants you to write, which you can get a hang of after the first few weeks. If you're at all interested in philosophy (especially metaphysics), you'll love this class.

Professor Carr means well, but her class is not engaging. Unless you are really into epistemology you will find this class boring. Also, there are too many assignments and she grades hard. I feel like only a very specific type of student would enjoy her class.

If you are looking for an easy A DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. With that said, professor Carr actually wants her students to comprehend and understand the material and actually learn something rather than just be able to regurgitate facts on a paper. Its a lot of work but worth it if you have the time.

REBECCA CARR CHANGED MY LIFE! I took her class in the fall of 2012 and to this day I reflect on our discussions. She is an incredible woman who can change the way you experience the world. TAKE THIS CLASS

Professor Carr comes across as tough and strict and is intimidating but one on one she is the sweetest professor. She really wants her students to succeed. She gives a lot of writing assignments and the course overall is very writing heavy. You can learn a lot from her and she is extremely knowledgeable. Go to office hours if you are struggling

I had never taken a philosophy class before this one, though I've studied European History extensively. This course requires an incredible amount of outside work to understand the readings and present the interpretation that she deems correct. She is fair and very willing to help. But oh my stars, prepare for to work.

Dr. Carr is a good professor. She cares about the success of her students, but she isn't always very clear in her explanations which can be difficult when you are reading Kant.

The texts are sometimes hard to read, but in class Carr explains everything clearly. The class is also interesting and although philosophy in general takes a lot of effort, paying attention was easy. She is a tough grader but if you put time and thought into your papers then you will be fine. Overall, a highly recommended prof. She is amazing.

Professor Carr assigns a lot of reading, but explains it very clearly (well, as clearly as you can explain philosophers like Descartes and Hegel) in class. She's a tough grader but use her office hours for extra help if you need it. Carr is hilarious once you get to know her casual humor and the class was something I looked forward to. Go for it!

Carr is an amazing professor. She is one of the hardest in the department of the philosophy but she really wants you to succeed. The focus of the course is philosophers, and philosophers that often contradict one another. She is a super tough grader but not impossible. She is always willing to talk about the material and help you do your best.

Carr's class is difficult, but not impossible to get an A in. If you only have a vague interest in Philosophy and want an easy A, I'd choose another professor. She's pretty demanding and did not let us use laptops. She offered multiple extra credit attempts, so although she grades hard, she has ways of boosting your grade

This course is more like "intro to philosophers" than intro to "philosophy" The texts can be difficult to understand. The midterms and exams are unpredictable. You will have to study EVERYTHING and have no idea what will be tested. The class consists of two five question tests and two essays. Study as much as possible!

Don't consider this class an "elective". If you invest the time and energy into the course, you will come out learning lots. Carr is a very knowledgeable professor that communicates in a very clear way. She might seem intimidating in class, but she is very, very helpful during her office hours. Tough grader, good writing skills strongly advised.

incomprehensible essay questions, lectures are not structured at all - but if she likes you, you get the A and its easy to make her like you if you a.) show up to class with vague notions of what the reading meant and b.) write almost like a poet (she loves beautiful, sweeping writing. understanding if you need extra time on something at least.

I passed the class, but not with a great grade. Even so, the subject matter was very interesting. We covered Kant, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, and Nietzsche among others. Although Professor Carr assigned a hellish amount of reading, she makes an effort to explain the material in class. After all, who completely understands Kant on the first try?

Comment:
This was one of my favorite classes at GW. Prof Carr is amazing. I suspect most of the negative comments are from people who thought that because they showed up to class most of the time they deserved an A. That so will not fly in this class, and it shouldn't. This isn't 'My Pet Goat' we're reading, its Kant, it should be challenging.
