Professor Bates is an amazing professor. The class is quite difficult, but Bates makes sure to provide enough resources for you to succeed. He holds office hours almost every day and answers every question thoroughly. The prerecorded lectures cover all the topics on the exams.

Professor Bates is one of the best professors. They are readily available for help and never judge the question that you ask. Don't fall behind on the lecture material and go the office hours if you want to do well in this course. Tests are relatively difficult but reasonable, given the number of practice worksheets provided.

All material is learned from either his videos or reading off his information heavy slides. Class is mostly graded off tests so not doing well will be detrimental to your grade. His meetings are not lecture and everything is learned on your own. I suggest not taking bates unless you are determined to spend hours studying and memorizing everything

He is a VERY nice guy, so I almost feel bad writing this, but he has been an awful professor. Extremely disorganized, takes forever to grade assignments, rambles on irrelevant topics to no end and over complicates explanations. Totally accessible, will answer eve4ryone's questions, etc. but not great for a tough subject like chem.

I had a great experience with AJ. His lectures and worksheets are exactly like his tests. You can expect the same kinds of questions. He is very helpful if you ever ask him any questions. He's an overall great guy and always had me laughing in class. He is a tough grader in lab but if you are unclear ask him and he will guide you to the answer.

Had to drop because I missed too many classes recovering from surgery, missed like four labs. As long as you study the previous tests + work available on canvas. He uses paid programs for homework as well.

Took his class in fall '18. His lectures were too simple which wasn't helpful since his exams were very complicated and complex. I had a different professor (Chang) for the lab portion and he was actually more helpful on teaching than Bates. Bates is tough at grading and half of the class were failing before I even withdrew from his class.

This professor makes simple concepts super complicated and hard to understand. His class won't be good if you don't have experience in chemistry before. The lab guides are hard to understand and you need to be a chemistry expert to answer the questions. Many errors too in the lab guides. Too much paper works

AJ is definitely one of my favorite professors. Lectures are easy to understand. He also does a lot of pactice problems in class & has practice work sheets on his website to make sure you understand what you're learning in class. HW is basically lab reports & online hw which contains 15 problems. Come to class, pay attention & you'll pass!

He is a good teacher. MUST COME TO CLASS AND PRACTICE ALL HIS WORKSHEETS!!!! He tends to talk softly in class, and it is easy to fall asleep in his afternoon classes, so sit in the front. Make sure to do all of his worksheets, even if they are just for practice. He is very meticulous. Pay attention to all Details in every aspect of class and labs.

He's a really good teacher! There's not a lot of homework that is mandatory, but he posts a LOT of worksheets and if you do them you should get an A on his tests! Expect to study, this is a chemistry class! He's really helpful too! I can't beleive that I have to wait until organic chemistry to take him again!!

The first day of lab he warned us that he's super picky, and HE ISN'T LYING. He is incredibly hard and very anal at times. I popped adderall a few days in a row and studied really hard for his midterms, but it's insane how difficult he can make be. I liked chemistry but after this class, I'm not too sure anymore...

Comment:
Talks in a round about way during his lectures. Only positive is the example problems. Negatives are tough exams and not getting to the point. Rivera has better lectures but Bates has more examples to learn off of.
