Comment:
This class is almost fully lab based. Be prepared to be in the field working on a group project nearly every class. Rich's lectures can be quite dry, but he is quite obviously a wealth of information on every topic. Participation is key, but he also gives great feedback on assignments. He definitely has his quirks but everyone highly respects him.

Rich is quirky but the sweetest guy! He has class outside, does lots of field trips and is super interesting. Can go on tangents. His grading doesn't always make sense and at least in FS too many LONG papers but if you have remote interest in nature it's SO WORTH IT!

Great professor--he's doing a million things to improve the community and ES department. He's very caring, easy to talk to. If you love ES, do yourself a favor and take a class with Rich. #SoilNerd

It's obvious that Rich really knows his stuff, and because of that he's good at explaining what you need to do while still letting you do it yourself. Even if you're not fond of his personality, you can't help but respect him. Also, if you're taking his class I hope you like classic rock.

Went on field trips every week for my FS. Doesn't like to give out 100%'s but a fair grader. I would retake his class in a heart beat

I highly recommend taking Rich's FS if you have any interest in being outside. Every lab period we were off campus, either camping, in the woods, or around town. Be aware though, Rich assigns about 8 books to read in entirety, and is very tough essay grader.

Rich is very interesting and passionate in his teaching. He makes class very hands-on, we spent at least three hours off campus a week. He grades papers fairly difficultly, expects his students to read like nine books front to back in a semester, but hes absolutely worth taking. He's one of the best professors at the school.

Rich is really flexible about handing in things late. Be prepared for long field trips that usually run late. We had a lot of assignments but they were mostly easy. Don't waste your time reading all the books he assigns.

Rich was my first FS professor at Allegheny. He knows how to run a class so that everyone single person feels connected and like a team. Both courses I've had with him felt like tight knit groups. He is like a father figure and truely cares about his students learning. He grades tough but gives second chances. I love this guy.

Really fun guy. This is a lab course and we pretty much ran the show. He canceled a lot simply because we couldn't do work on our project on those days. This course is often team taught but not my semester.

Very nice guy to talk with, enthusiastic about everything, but tries to perpetuate his field as a hard science by grading too severe without good reason. Other En. sci professors are much more open about actually reading answers or papers

A nice individual most of the time, but only if you are looking for help on his terms, hes not very open to seeing the other side of any situation or problem. When he does try to be helpful, his explainations are often either difficult to understand, or longwinded and dull.

Professor Bowden is extremely professional, friendly, dedicated, and excited about the topics he teaches. He is an authority in his field and well respected in his literature. Claims that he is unfriendly are faulty and are likely a result of lack of effort by the student. I only wish I had taken more of his classes earlier in school.

He knows what he's talking about, and REALLY wants everyone to learn and be part of the "team". Papers are hard, but teach you how to write a sci. paper. Labs are fun, but be prepared - he thinks this is your only class, so it's okay to have 8 hour labs.

Professor Bowden tries to be helpful - I'll give him that...but his explanations are just really hard to follow. Sometimes, I think he uses jargon, when he could explain concepts in much more understandable terms, and why he does this, I do not know.
