Condescending and unhelpful. His course packs were also very confusingly set up, as was his lecture style. My French did not improve with him as a professor.

Comment:
My least favourite class at McGill. Jean-Yves is condescending and scoffs at students' mistakes. He expected us to do homework from his own ($200) textbook, which was not available at the bookstore until weeks into the course, and wouldn't even give photocopies of the first chapters. Overall, his teaching did not improve my French at all.

He's very frank and honest. That means if you make a mistake in class, he will correct you immediately.

Jean-Yves clearly knows what he's talking about, but most of the time he just lectures about grammar and you never really get a chance to practice your French. I'm honestly not even sure if my French improved that much. The tests are all on very picky grammar specifics, but you'll do fine if you follow the instructions for the presentations.

His presentations are very easy to get good grades on if you do what he asks. It is also easy to get a good participation grade. His tests are very hard, but I could have done much better had I really learned all the material because he does tell you exactly what is testable. His tests are definitely possible to get a great grade on if try hard.

His tests are basically impossible, but he clearly outlines the criteria for the presentations so you should get good grades on those/

Jean-Yves is a really good teacher, though he can be unnecessarily rude sometimes. It's clear that he really wants you to succeed and he does his best to explain the grammar. Participate as much as you can in class to get on his good side. His tests can be tricky sometimes, but they're doable - just practice with the coursepack and Vouloir!

Jean-Yves is a charismatic professor who makes French fun! He creates interesting group assignments that are marked fairly (especially if you have creative ideas and good oral communication skills). On the other hand, grammar tests were nearly IMPOSSIBLE, and this was very frustrating to me and many of my classmates.

Jean-Yves is nicer than everyone seems to think. This class isn't hard if you just go to class and do all the things. Tests are the hardest out of all the things - though the final is much easier than the practice material. Highly recommended class, but you need to show up to class all the time.

Jean-Yves Richard is not condescending, he's just very frank. If you're wrong, he'll tell you that, even if it's in front of the whole class. Just don't take his forthright corrections personally, that's how you learn in this course! He pushes you to do your best and is always willing to clarify. Excellent prof, challenging and rewarding course.

Comment:
Prof. Richard has his on-and-off days... Sometimes he was very kind and seemed in love with the world and our class, other days there was just a lot of, well, sarcasm and kind of short-temperedness. Overall though, I'd say he's pretty fair and willing to help. I learned a lot, though such a huge focus on grammar made me question my love for French!

Comment:
The class isn't too hard, but Richard is crazy. He's condescending and if you ask for help (in or out of class) he looks at you as though you're insane. He also practically forced people out of our class so he could have the number he wanted. In FRSL 431 it is worth sticking around for Deslauriers, however.

Comment:
This prof is not a likable guy. I agree with the earlier post that said that, if he doesn't like you, you're screwed. He seems insecure, and is a borderline bully in the classroom. He does subtle things like putting you on the spot, and then asking repeated questions about grammar until you get stumped. His attitude is generally condescending.

Worst class you could take. He seems like a nice, fair guy, but if he decides he doesn't like you... you're screwed. Useless class taught by an obsessive prof. Wouldn't recommend this course or prof to anyone.

The guy looks more like Al Pacino than any other human being walking the planet. Great professor as well, lots of work but you'll learn it and be a better speaker because of it.

He really cares about what he teaches and wants his students to understand. It can be quite tedious at times if you don't have a strong interest in grammar, but he is a clear teacher and his tests are challenging but fair.
