A really caring, and understanding prof. You can tell she really is passionate about what she does. Only complaint is that the children's literature course is a lot of little things and meticulous work, but overall easy.

Comment:
I would not advise any English student to take her 2740 childrens lit, it is the most meticulous class i have ever taken. In childrens lit we stared at a page from a childrens book and talked about it for 45 minutes, it really isn't that deep. She has a passion but i do not believe this course belongs at the University level. Take it if you must...

Comment:
The extra scholarship she assigned was full of theory- more to do with the social sciences. They were boring and most of them were a stretch from being relevant to the actual children's books we read. The exam was bogus essays were brutal to write because of the scholarship assigned. Rubrics ARE CONFUSING. IS IT ABOUT TOYS/STORIES or FOLK CULTURE.

She is passionate about her work but honestly don't really understand why anyone would complicate children's literature... She makes you work with way too much theory and blocks in your imagination. There is only one right answer to her questions. Pretty much feels like you're in a social science class.

Taking a course with Schacker is a challenge, but a worthwhile challenge. Shes a great lecturer and teaches some very interesting subjects, but makes you work to learn. While she does offer a challenge, she is great with feedback and provides positive critiques to help you improve. One of the best professors Ive had.

Prof Schacker started off nice but then kind of changed her expectations and the course's subject. You think your talking about kids lit and then the course morfs to a social science course. Easy grader though.

Schacker will teach you amazing things about the English language, but she is close-minded to ideas that differ from her own. She will constantly interrupt you in class/presentations, and no matter how hard you work you will always stay around the same grade. Good lecturer and you can tell she's passionate about her work, but too hard on marking.

Taking my second course with her and she is one of my favourite profs. In regards to claims that she is close-minded to opinions, Ive never personally experienced this in class. She does however caution students to be careful with their terminology in discussions and isnt afraid to vocalize it - especially when students generalize ideas/groups.

Great prof - would recommend her to anyone. She was amazing outside of class every time I went to see her. As long as you show interest in the course and demonstrate that you want to do better, she'll respect you. She's never interrupted anyone that I've seen. Had her for 2740 & 2120, her grading was ok but a bit unclear at times.

She was extremely unclear about the assignment requirements. If she thought you were a B student there was no transitioning to an A no matter how hard you worked for it. I was really disappointed in this class.

Where do I start? Took her online class & after this I refuse to take another online english course. If your opinion differs from hers good luck, she has no problem shutting interesting views on texts down if she doesn't share the same outlook. To sum it up: her class was more about conforming to her views than creating your own. So disappointing!

Schacker is a thorough teacher. She provides a lot of useful feedback on assignments (our first close reading she typed a full page for each of us) and gives honest marks. My only criticisms are: 1. She sometimes speaks too fast and 2. Often interrupts students when they try to offer an opinion or are presenting. Overall a useful course with her.

She knows her material. If your opinion differs from hers, you have to be prepared to give an educated argument at all times. She cares about what she is teaching A LOT and notices if you don't. If you take teachers criticism personally, do not take her class. She does not criticize to be mean, but to help you help yourself.

Comment:
Children's lit was a great class. I appreciated that she would tell people when they were off base (instead of smiling and nodding along as other profs often do), and she was helpful, engaging, approachable, and easy to talk to. I'm sad that I didn't discover her sooner! Take class with her if you can!
