Comment:
Prof Ball does lectures a little differently. He speaks the entire class with no powerpoint or anything to guide the lecture which can be a little boring. If you like hands-on learning and having a structured lecture you might not like Ball. Only grades are 3 essays throughout the semester but are graded easily. I enjoyed it.

This instructor is incredibly knowledgeable. I learned so much and think Civil War should only be taught this in-depth. Reading is more than mangeable if you keep up. Book selections were perfect, paper topics perfectly-germane. Learn to embrace your inner Chicago Style.

Although he talks very quietly. It is an issue easily fixed, I sat near the front of the class and I could hear him easily. Other people simply invested in a recorder for his lectures. He seemed quite passionate about the topic and made it a lot of fun to take his course, I never felt rushed to absorb mountains of info. Overall a great professor

Aww why is everyone hating on him? He's really nice and is a really good teacher if you sit up front and actually listen to what he's saying. The only grades were three papers that were based off lectures and readings. I didn't read a single book and made an A. I'd definitely take a class with him again. Go to class, he gives extra credit!

History of Popular Music was pretty interesting reading-wise but lectures could be dull. It's not that the subject matter is boring but that his voice is monotonous. Sit near the front, he is soft spoken and is incomprehensible from far away. A nice guy but just not good at grabbing students' attention... Grade is from 3 (4-6 pg) take-home essays.

This Pop Music History class nearly killed me. It was UNBELIEVABLY boring, his voice is devastatingly monotonous. How could someone take such a fun and interesting subject and turn it into dreary bore?! Stay away from this class if you are just looking for an elective. I did my absolute BEST work on my first paper and received an 85%.

I find Prof. Ball to be one of the best professors I have had yet at UNM. He is incredibly knowledgeable in Hist. of Popular Music, and will work with you if you run into some trouble. I highly recommend him to anyone who has a passion for history or music.

Professor Ball is a good guy, however, but not as good a teacher. He is very soft spoken and is a bit disorganized and is boring. However, if you meet with him outside class he is extremely helpful and clear. The books are not needed except for papers (he expects quotes). Overall not the best history teacher I've had, but was decent.

Although Durwood Ball is extremley soft spoken and a bit unorganized when it comes to lecturing, his class was informative. I admit I fell asleep a few times throughout the semester, but it was really interesting listening to a New Mexico history finatic. You wont need the books, he tells you everything that will be on the test.

Like others have said, Prof. Ball is incredibly boring. Be warned. That said, if you read the books and do the homework you might never have to go to class.

Hist of Pop Music was very entertaining. Three take home assignments are graded by the TA, so Ball really has nothing to do with your final grade. Lectures, class discussions and readings were fun, but grade depends on the TA.

If you're a serious history student and have done well in previos history classes, expect to do well in Ball's class. The tests are much easier than any history class I've taken before. But be sure to go to the review sessions, his TAs grade a bit harshly
