Comment:
Dr. Hines is super nice and also really clearly knowledgeable and well respected as a scientist! However she probably wasn't the right person to teach this class. I don't feel like I learned much that I didn't already learn from introductory classes on oceanography and geography and I feel like the class could benefit from a more organized format.

Absolutely no clear stance on what each project, test of final will be weighed as. No idea how many point are in the class total or how much each test is worth.. nice and knowledgeable, but utterly helpless

Ellen is a very caring and motivated teacher. She cares about her work and her students, although she can be very tough. She expects a lot out of her students and she will not let you get away with much. That being said, you may learn a lot but you will have to work for it

She's rude, not knowledgeable, speak too low for a big class. You don't learn much in this class. Useless!

Comment:
Are there two teachers named Ellen Hines at SFSU? I found her to be rather unprofessional - rude, condescending, and habitually late. She is a poor communicator and demands respect when it is not earned. She knows GIS, no doubt, but teaching it using threats and embarrassment are NOT good techniques for helping others learn. Thumbs down.

I have really enjoyed Professor Hines. She is passionate and clear. She is a canadian and sneaks in those 'ay''s every once in a while. I have thoroughly enjoyed her class and am planning on taking the GIS class with her as well. es muy importante to attend class. both of you will really appreciate it.

Ellen is really nice and very flexible about turning in papers via email and excusing your absences. She doesnt have a whole lot of experience in environmental studies, but a lot in marine biology. She's very open to student comments and she has the easiest tests ever! print out the powerpoint presentations to take notes on and you cant go wrong.

I don't know what the negative comment is about. I think she is extremely intelligent, informative and interesting. She is also helpful outside of the classroom as someone to reference when making career decisions.

Comment:
Her class was boring and uninformative. She doesn't know know her stuff. She demands respect without earning it, and then does not respect her students in turn. She needs to improve her understanding of the subject and deal with her emotional problems before she'll become a decent teacher. Don't waste your time on her class.
