super knowledgable but lecture is just that: him talking the entire time. if you like linguistic anthro, be ready for way more ling than anthro in this class. readings are heavy, but not all are needed for the papers. had a great time doing the papers (your own research) and there was no final or midterm exam besides those

Hanks is a fantastic professor, I honestly didn't need to read much because he was so thorough with his lectures. He's interesting and entertaining, passionate about his work and very helpful with guidance for tests and papers. Midterm was take home essay, two easy quizzes and a final. It's like story time every morning with this guy! Loved it.

Hanks is a wonderful teacher! He is interesting and he really tries to make sure everyone gets the material. If you are interested in Linguistic Anthropology, you HAVE to take him! PLEASE do yourself a favor and keep up on the reading! The readings are not that interesting but you NEED it to write the papers and you'll take FOREVER catching up.

Sexy! Those beautiful blue eyes... If you can keep focused on the material - which, in all seriousness, isn't hard to do because it's so interesting - then you will probably do well. Take detailed notes! *Do* read and study your notes. You'll get more out of the class and do better on the quizzes and papers. I got perfect and near-perfect scores.

Hanks is inspiring. He really wants all his students to do well, and believes in us - although most in my class neglected the readings. Mandatory attendance, and recommended as well because lectures are essentially the only test material. His field study was VERY hands-on, as in he was trained as a Maya shaman. Highly recommend taking his class!

This is not a class for those who learn better by discussion. It is pretty much a professor Hanks monologue, but it was one of the best classes that I have taken at Berkeley. Professor Hanks is clever, funny and gives the best lectures. I would take this class again if I could.

Comment:
I took the class on ethnography of the Maya and it was ultimately disappointing. Hanks presented a history of the Maya from the classic period to the present. He would say that "there's no such category as the Maya," and then continually insert really stereotypical vignettes of Mayan society. I don't recommend.

Prof Hanks is great. Very knowledgable, clear and helpfull. Readings were very interesting and has some amazing experience when it comes to Maya people and the region. Sweet professor, very kind. His main GSI was weird, got to teach few last classes. Very selfcentered and loves the attention, but not a good lecturer.HANKS RULES

He is the kind of professor one hopes to have at Berkeley as his lectures are passionate, very informative, and absolutely compelling. Dr. Hanks is in the forefront of Mayan scholarship and has written a number of important works thereon. Very accessible in office hours, of which you should definitely partake. Highly recommended!!!

Great professor. He's basically a Mayan Shaman. Like.. fully trained. The guy is crazy awesome. Knows the subject so well and really cares about the students. Go see him in office hours and he'll like you more come midterm/final times which are both take home. Easy class. Go to lecture.

Amazing, passionate, knowledgeable anthro teacher. Very interesting class, more history based than I expected. He is very old-school and the class is purely lecture-based, no powerpoints, and a few movies. Fair assignments.

Easy and fun professor. He has a lot of personal experiences to contribute to the class. Fulfills breadth requirement Historical Values. "tests" are hella easy! Don't need an Anthro backgrd for the class. What I did is copy word for word what he said in lecture and put that in my essays, which I got As in! An easy A class! Good experience over all.

His lectures are incredibly well organized, thoughtful and interesting and his wit adds enough spice to keep the pace of the class up. He's also really nice and accomodating if you have a real problem....Oddly sexy in a professor kinda way :X

Passionate and unique lectures that might weigh slightly more on the linguistical scale than desirable, but worth it for an intense and meaningful learning experience.

I LOVE THIS MAN. I am a Social Welfare major, and took this class on a whim (and because he got really good ratings!) I learned more in this class than in any other. BY FAR the BEST professor I have ever had. Didn't miss a single class, and left wishing that there had been more! Interesting, funny, ridiculously intelligent, a really nice guy.

Dr. Hanks is fantastic. The material is really interesting and you learn a lotn abhout the Maya, but he also slips in complex theories like Foucalt and you dont even know. The tests are easy and you can do well from class notes and a little extra research as long as you understand the material. It is the perfect sociocultural for an archaeologist.

your grade is based on: 2 quizzes (which consist of IDs that he gives you about a week in advance), a take-home midterm essay, and a take-home final essay. it's a very easy A and pretty interesting.
