The reading and coursework were excessive. Ces't Lavie? Sus to me! I went to every tutorial and zoom lecture, to office hours for advice on how to do well, and did most of the readings (not all, I have 4 other classes and need time to eat/sleep too). If you're usually an A student who puts in ample time and effort, get ready for a B & a breakdown.

The midterm was marked very harsh and did not give students a chance for success. The assignments were also marked a bit harsh as it was hard to get over an 80. With that being said the lectures did not help us in achieving great marks in the midterm and assignments. Overall, a negative experience. Do not take this course if you do not need it.

Nice professor, knows her stuff. I learned nothing from this class and the amount of readings is ridiculous. If you don't do all the readings (even if you show up to every class) you won't do well.

I have taken three classes with Boland and there is a reason I keep coming back for more! Boland is a great lecturer; her lectures are interesting and inspirational. Additionally, Boland reserves the first rows of her classroom as a designated screen free zone for students who wish to write pen to paper without the distraction of electronics.

I understand she is very supportive and sincere to her students. However, as a student with English as a second language, her class was full of theory and unclear concepts. The course itself was very conceptual and she grades very harsh on writing which can be tricky for many international students.

This class tends to get boring and you had to go to every lecture if you wanted to do somewhat well. Way too many essays, and then ended up marking extremely had on all of them. I don't recommend taking this class unless you're aiming to get a 60-65. Also doesn't give proper reviews for midterms/finals which results in having to study everything

Amazing professor, grading was fair and really teaches a lot. You get out of this course what you put in, and you will get your moneys worth (tuition), with the amount of content you will learn about in this course. Amazing lectures with videos, and an even better professor. Due to the fact that she is liked, prepare to line up for office hours

Professor Boland is by far the best prof I've had at U of T. Both the way she designs her assignments and the feedback she gives on them has greatly helped to improve my skills in writing and researching. I frequently refer back to her comments while completing other assignments. I always left class feeling enthused about the topics she discussed.

Great professor. I'm not in geography, but this course was well worth it. Very helpful prof, useful tutorials and very clear readings (there were some strange ones this year- but the prof has confirmed she's removing them for 2016!)

A great class. Alana is very passionate about China, and has done a lot of research over the years on the ground and has the experiences to share. The class is a little long (3 hours) & It may seem a little overwhelming on day one knowing there is a quiz week 3, a midterm and 2 (short) essay assignments but easy to manage. I recommend this class!

Alana is very nice, and is really excited about teaching. The mid-term for this class was really hard, however the assignments and tutorials were pretty good, fairly simple. The final exam was easier than the midterm and was good for drawing concepts of the course together.

Best Prof I have had yet. Really goes the extra miles for her students. Love her!! Many students in the class are of Chinese background and/or have a high passion for China studies. The lectures do appeal to everybody, however. Workload is very high, and the marking is quite tough. But you will definitely learn a lot.

I really enjoyed her teaching, the subject material, and the conversations we shared. Unfortunately, I found her assignments uninteresting (mostly literature reviews; no opportunity for research) and the examination was surprisingly difficult in relation to the course. Overall a positive experience.

hardest social science class ever - tonnes of painfully blase, repetitive readings. be prepared to get to know a lot of wishy-washy isms in a wishy-washy way. very hard marker, but makes up for this by being very helpful. Alana (Al-ain-a) is willing to go the extra mile for her students, and is very easy to talk to. takes a novel approach

One of the best professors I have had. She is extremely passionate about the material and open to tangential discussions that end up enriching the approach to the material as well. She is there to learn as much as she is there to teach. Very valuable learning experience. The workload is extremely heavy though, be aware.
