This class is the only reason I have not totally written off taking education at UofC. While his past experience is lacking, the lectures and discussions we have in class are some of the best I have had in my 5 years at University. I would recommend to any student at UofC especially those in the ED program as we are often limited to teacher choice.

He can be a nice guy at times and humorous but at times he comes off as very degrading to others and hurtful.

Michael is a really nice guy. His class however, I found a tremendous waste of time. His agenda was the same every class, and this was not a class on gender in education, but a class on teaching English to high school students.

Excellent Professor, definitely in his element teaching a course on masculinity and education. Interesting material, engaging discussions, fair assignments, I'm glad I took his course!

Kehler was fun at the start of the year, but over time class discussions always seemed to focus on the same theories. His suggestions are way outside the realm of normal teaching and some material he suggests presenting to students could get you fired. DO NOT reuse any material from other classes or he will try to put you on academic probation.

As a former student of Kehler's, I can safely say that what I learned from him lacks in realistic pedagogy! He has ideas that are wonderful - if used in the setting of students who are keeners (ie. teacher candidates). His proposed pedagogy does NOT work with regular high school English students! An idealist, not a realist!

I didn't mind his agenda at all - but I did mind that he screwed us all over on the final assignment (worth 50%). He was entertaining for awhile, but his touchy feely class got old fast.

Kehler definately has an agenda, but we all do. He has challenged my view of teaching time and time again, and, while he is a little weak on techniques and practical advice, his pedagogical explorations have made this class my most beneficial class at Western. Very intense, and very interested in each student. Also, very approachable.

The complaints about Kehler lack substance. Sure, he has a theory hobby-horse, but guess what, folks...he's teaching future English teachers. We're English teachers! What did you expect? Kehler was personable, friendly and open, maybe a bit stubborn. But he modelled what he taught in his teaching style, and the guy had energy! Yeah, Mike!

An amazing, entertaining, and inventive class! Kehler is like Willy Wonka! Each day was magical! His "political agenda" that so many are whining about is nothing short of some of the most important thinking going on in academia today. If you want a typcial "how-to" class, then avoid; if you want magic and imagination--this is for YOU!

Michael will challenge you to think about White and Male priviledge constantly. Sometimes in lieu of the topic's focus. He is clever and has a great sense of humour. He values student input but does expect his agenda to be prominent in the discussion. Assignments can be vague and must support his views to ensure acceptance. Worth the risk.

He pretends that he was the greatest high-school teacher, yet he only taught highschool for two years. His expectations were unclear, and I did not use anything from his class in my own classroom. He played favourites and his daycamp type of classroom (as previously mentioned) got tiring quickly. A waste of time and money- get some real experience!

You never know what he wants. He gives unclear instructions to make you feel like you have a lot of leeway to be creative, but don't be fooled! He wants something very specific, he just doesn't want to tell you what that is. Some of the things you do are fun, but is that really what you're paying for?

Comment:
If you want to experience a monotonous class that prepares you for NOTHING this is your best bet. Avoid this class - Kehler does not prepare his students to teach. Intead, his classroom merely becomes propaganda where he pushes his own political views.
