I really don't recommend this professor. Online lectures are 3 hours long and he often makes no sense at all which makes them pretty intolerable. Exams were 100+ multiple choice/short answer in approx an hour. I can't say it's difficult; just not worth your time. Three midterms make up your entire mark so one bad test ruins your mark. Not worth it.

Terrible. Talked about bees on a loop for 6 hours (2 full lectures). Will never, ever take again. I watched a girl open the exam booklet and cry. We had an hour to write a 90 question essay, no they were not all multiple choice

I personally really enjoyed his lectures. The subject matter is not very interesting, but he is really passionate and funny. It is a challenging course, you must go over the slides in depth and memorize the bolded stuff. Only 3 tests (30%,30%,40%), not cumulative. Like 80-90 MC questions and like 7-10 short answers, to do in 1 hour. Very intense.

The worst professor that I have had at SFU so far. He is condescending and makes no sense most of the time. When I would go up to him to ask him a question, he would put his face really close to mine and say "look into my eyes" and make me feel incredibly uncomfortable before responding. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS.

A very nice man, but impossibly boring and extremely unclear. The lectures were dry and hard to follow, and he often literally just read off the lecture slides. Most frustratingly, nothing in the class was really explained or elaborated on in any way, leading to everything being total rote memorization that doesn't even make sense. Avoid.

The final was ridiculous. After the questions which we only had two hours to complete he made us stay an extra 20 minutes holding up our IDs to the screen so he could check each ID personally. The silliest online final ive ever had. He also changed the exam time and didn't allow students who missed it to redo it. Not good

The most boring professor I have ever met. He constantly goes off-topic and takes forever to explain the material. Sometimes, he runs over time (even after a 3 hour class) and rushes his last points as everyone is leaving. The only reason he is rated so high is because his exams are easy multiple choice and you can just memorize the slides to pass.

Kind-hearted, wholesome man but a poor lecturer. The two assignments are online and absolutely useless for the exam. You need to be in class to understand what he's trying to teach but get read to teach yourself everything. His teaching style is not great which made this class hard. Got away with guessing 70% of answers on exams and somehow passed.

Iouri replies every e-mail from students and he will put all the questions in a document then uploads it to the canvas so that we can go over those questions before midterms or final. This is good. I won't take his courses anymore because his lecture is NOT GOOD. It will make you suffer to some extent.

pure memorization course. relatively easy course but the driest material. the prof is so boring and slow and its ironic that hes a linguist cause he cannot communicate clearly. his notes are super confusing. be ready to self teach. but if you are good at teaching yourself and basically just memorization the textbook you will be fine.

I took this course back in Spring of 2018. Iouri is a very caring and kind prof and makes a lot of time for his students if they need help with the class content after his lectures and during his office hours. His lectures can get a bit dry, as they often are 3 hours long, but he gives useful memorization tips for the content and is a solid choice.

He's a really nice guy and it's clear he's passionate about what he's teaching but boy is he dull. During course selection season his rating here went from its current 3.2 to a 4.2, and then back down. Additionally in his syllabus and online he spells his name as Iouri Pankrats (unable to find him here). I can't help but be suspicious of this.

Lots of reading, dry content, and your mark is comprised of 3 midterms worth 30, 30 and 40%. This is the worst professor I've ever had by far. Lectures move at a snail's pace, you can self-study the content in 1/3 the time. About 50% of his lectures are "background information" and personal stories but if you skip them you miss tiny details.

He's frustrating. Clearly knows what he's talking about, and clearly passionate about his material given he's been teaching this course for so long, but his poor English skills translate into both his lectures and his notes, which make them difficult to decipher. He also frequently ignores students who try to answer his questions or ask any too.

Kind of a frustrating professor. Hard to understand, rambles a lot, his tests and lecture notes are formatted really strangely and hard to understand due to English not being his native language. He posts all his lecture notes and records his lectures, which is nice. You can tell he is really passionate about what he teachers, but it's quite boring

Says "guys" a lot. Sometimes adds in (partially related) stories - gives a few minutes of break time in addition to 20 minutes true break (for 3 hour lectures). Some words are not enunciated correctly - usually possible to guess which word he meant. Memorization heavy. Only true/false, short answer, multiple choice and fill-in-the-blanks.
