Comment:
Resler does a good job going over the material and simplifying it knowing that most people haven't done any programming before. Quizzes are tough but you can do well if you show up to class and pay attention the entire time. Labs and homework are easy. Some projects are difficult but you have a good amount of time to do them. Start early on them.

Study for the QUIZZES. They add up and he loves to put "gotchas" on them. He's a little strict, but in learning programming it is sometimes good. His lectures are pretty clear with a PowerPoint. He won't help much on projects so you're better off asking a TA. Final is optional if you are happy with your grade. Doesn't explain grading policy well.

His class isn't the most difficult but you should definitely try on the quizzes because it'll add up. He is a "meh" teacher; seems to not care about what he's doing. He even showed up 30 minutes late to class and even declines to answer questions. He's very questionable but hey, he's not too different from other programming teachers.

I had zero programming skills at beginning of the yet I got B. The professor takes it step by step he gives u time to absorb and encourage questioning he is reasonable. Grading 5% hw 10%lab those r free points.20% quiz 35% projects u have to get at least 60% in quiz/project to pass class. 15% mid term and optional final 15%. If i can do it u can!!

The projects take so long, and you need to google basically everything. Only one class a week does not work well.

For someone in the unenviable position of teaching new programmers how to code in C, Resler does his best. Lectures are informative but the main learning comes from the labs and the projects. Very easy-going and is very helpful during office hours.

Difficult but fair. He usually telegraphs what will be on the tests by the way he talks about it in lecture. The final project was pretty tough

dan taught me very well and I managed an A with absolutely no prior experience. His lectures are very clear and concise. His class is well laid out, with small homework readings assigned alongside 7 projects throughout the year. He has quizzes every other class where he does pull some tricks, so just read the material carefully and you'll do fine.

I took this class without any prior programming experience, and even though he claims you don't need prior experience, you do. He loves to put "gotcha's" in his quizzes, tests (midterm & final), labs and especially the programming projects. You'll spend a lot of time searching google and asking other classmates for help with the work for this class

Easily the best CS prof at VCU and he's not even in the department. He really cares that you learn the material. Left the class having a lot more confidence that I could fairly easily pick up any programming language quickly. Take him if you can.

Probably my favorite professor this semester (out of 6). His teaching style is a lot more laid back than most. Highly efficient with programming and explains things well. Just know that he sometimes confuses programming languages, but he usually fixes mistakes quickly or tests it out on the spot. Make sure you do the programs yourself.

An excellent teacher but you must work hard to get a good grade. Slackers won't like him! Really knows his stuff but sometimes he seems bored with the material. Too bad he left the C.S. department.

Fortunately for you, r. Daniel resler has moved on from the CS dept @ VCU. A man w a Ph.D. in computer science that: Doesn't (know how to) use blackboard.. how about hand written grades on paper for your programming projects! Will do his best not to help you: one-word answers, or will decline to answer questions. Couldn't pass his own class.

Dr. Resler loves what he does and it shows. He knows the C language like the back of his hand and he makes you want to learn it. His programming assignments are tough in that they make you think creatively to solve the main problem. Don't take him if you want an easy A without learning anything, but if you want to be inspired he's your teacher.

The class can be quite difficult mostly if it is your first time programming. Eventually, things get a little better. There are quizzes every week and projects every 2 weeks. The class is taught from powerpoints. I felt like most of the time Dr. Resler reads from the powerpoints. If you have an questions, he is always ready to help.

He graded graciously in this class, which saved me in this class. Program assignments are pretty easy as long as you start ontime. There is always one trick for programs. Exams are fair for the material. Pretty good teacher!

One of my favorite CS professors thus far. Puts the focus of the course on the actual programming projects rather than the fluff of exams and quizzes. Attendance isn't required but there are almost daily pop-quizzes (easy if you've been following lecture). Overall a good professor who knows what he's teaching and can express ideas clearly.

Encourages questions, so the slow learners can keep up. Compiler Construction is not an easy class by definition but the concepts were well explained. Take this class if you enjoy coding. Really helps improve design skills. You will improve yourself in this class!
