Comment:
Sometimes goes off on tangents and makes problems more complicated than they need to be, but mostly a very good professor and a very easy class, if you're mathematically inclined.

Comment:
If you've heard horror stories about Shafer-Ray, don't freak out. Sometimes he goes a bit far off into theory b/c he is very very smart, but that stuff wasn't on the tests, anyway. He is not very organized, but he is always entertaining (he showed a Weird Al music video in class!), and he really does want his students to understand.

You absolutely need Calc IV or Diff EQ to understand what's going on. Do not take his class.

He can be a very trying professor to deal with. Will spend a lot of class time on things not truly necessary, and little class time on what his test are going to hit you with. You truly need to have had Calc IV before taking this class to make it through, or his test will kill you.

He can be frustrating in lecture b/c he's so disorganized... but he really cares and is helpful if you go by his office. Take the honors section - you're required to go to the discussion, but everything that you do in there is for extra credit. Its actually easier than the the regular class.

I was in Physics 2 and he made homeowork 5% HIT pts 10% and tests 85%. There was no partial credit on test, only 20 ques. The final was awful, with only 2 hours and so many questions.

very easy to get a good grade because of his GPA system (i.e. cruve), but didn't learn a thing. Lectures are very quick and confusing; if you go to his office hours he will help

He is still working on perfecting his methods as a professor. He's been handed a very difficult class to teach, Physics II (with well over 200 students), and I would like to see someone that could do a better job than he is right now.

He goes too fast with his lectures and makes it seem like he has no time for students, but he really does care and is willing to help.

The most difficult part of his teaching is that he never gives us any demonstrations, everything is conceptual.

Most people say that it is pretty difficult to do well on the tests from the lectures, and definatly the homework is hard, but not impossible. I would suggest making heavy use of his office hours.
