Dan is such a treasure! I loved Astro so much and his passion really brought the course material to life. I would highly recommend taking Astro100 even if you have no interest in the sciences. A must-take Oberlin class.

stinebring would get things wrong during class or flat out teach us the wrong thing. he's very approachable (he will definitely help you during office hours or a problem session) but his lectures are disorganized and super unclear. instead of teaching us the material he'd often tell us to read the textbook..... not helpful

Awesome guy and a great professor! He brought astronomy to life, and made a lowly "rocks for jocks" style class rich and fascinating, and dare I say fun? I had the lowest expectations for this class, and I actually learned a lot and had a great time too. And he's always down to talk outside of class, and really cares. A really special teacher.

A great professor!!! ASTR 100 is great for getting your natural science credit. It's not hard if you study the mastering astronomy portions online. Dan is super helpful and enthusiastic as well.

This is a good class for those looking for a natural science credit. The professor is friendly, but often is spaced out. He may even be an alien!

This professor was disorganized and I had a difficult time following his lectures. I learned a lot but most was straight from the textbook.

Comment:
Stinebring is an approachable professor; however, he does not explain concepts clearly, is often late, and was clearly unprepared for class, as shown by the multiple mistakes he made during lectures, several of which he did not catch until later in the lecture. Problem sets were distributed much later than promised. The textbook was very useful.

Did not come to class prepared or on time; class started 10 minutes late multiple times. Rarely attempted to teach, and when he did, he gave longwinded and convoluted explanations of very simple concepts. Most of class time was spent answering i-clicker questions on material that he had taught us nothing about. The textbook was great though.

I love this prof! He is so enthusiastic about astronomy. You have go to observation sessions during the semester and Planetarium classes but the class isn't hard. I hate physics with a passion but I really enjoyed this class. And there are tutoring sessions to help you with the homework assignments. If you go to those you'll do good in the class.

Fabulous lab instructor. Very attentive to detail. Will sometimes put you on the spot to answer a question, but he only does it because you ought to know the answer. :P One of the most helpful professors in the department I have so far encountered.

Dan Stinebring is really a terrible professor. He takes twice as long as is needed to present anything mathematical in class, as he always waits ten or fifteen minutes to catch errors in his work. Why doesn't he prepare these derivations before class? Also, he ALWAYS DISTRIBUTES PROBLEM SETS SEVERAL DAYS LATER THAN HE SAYS HE WILL. Frustrating.

Great lecturer- a wee bit spacy, but in a sweet way. Makes you interested in the subject. Very helpful, knowledgable- Loves what he does, and loves the students. (Er... not in THAT way.) Highly recommended. He makes me want to be an astrophysicist. Rock on, Stinebring!

What a great guy. Not a fan of huge lecture classes but that can't be helped. Class is a piece of cake, science-wise, but fun. Infectious cheer and touching enthusiasm. Also reminded me uncannily of my dad.

His Astro classes are very different than his phys class. He's SO enthusiastic, so helpful, so funny (Mass is Destiny!) and really wants his students to walk away with lessons learned. Each class he is well prepared and he is staffed by a great group of people (tutors and the other astronomers). Fight tooth and nail to get this class.

A nice guy and helpful one-on-one, but horribly inept at teaching. Doesn't seem to prepare his lectures, and often makes glaring factual errors and mathematical blunders. Seems to treat teaching the course as a lark, not a job. I don't think I learned anything from him that I wouldn't have learned working through the book on my own. Easy tests.

Oy, where to begin. His heart is in the right place, and I think I'd rather have him than Ijiri for this course...but still. His lectures are filled with "Um..." But he's all right in lab. Except when he talks for the first 45 minutes and destroys my attention span...

He really tries hard to teach well, but he's horribly disorganized and poor at explaining the concepts. Lectures on a topic that made sense from the reading will often leave you confused on that topic by their end, and his train of thought resembles a train wreck.
