Hes a good teacher. I was wrongly put into a honor's course but stuck with it anyways, the class is more difficult than the normal 132 course, but his teaching allows me to take it. He has a lot of online hw and 1 difficult challenge hw every week. He is also a very difficult grader. Even when I was sure I did well on a hw I'd end up with a 6/20.

He covers a lot of material, but doesn't explain much. Does no examples in class, in office hours or in review sessions. He doesn't explain the material well, but he tries. You have to teach yourself. Gives no practice problems to prepare you for the test, only the study guide that doesn't cover all the topics on the exam. If you can, avoid him.

Stopped going to class because it was completely useless. Tried using the book it was completely useless. Tried going to office hours it was completely useless. Harshest homework grading I've seen and exams nearly impossible. Avoid taking this class.

This class is almost impossible to pass. Homeworks take awhile and are graded harshly, but don't matter as if you get below a 55 average on tests you automatically fail the class. Tests are 90% proofs that were never gone over and reviews are vague. You can get a lower score by guessing on the exam than not taking it as extra points are taken off.

He is a good lecturer and gives clear notes and expectations. However, this class is HARD. It's called "applied" but it is mainly theoretical proofs with some need for Matlab. Homeworks take about 10 hours to do and you won't get a good grade on them which is frustrating.

I can't understand his teaching. I liked linear algebra before this course and now it makes me want to cry. The course is also "applied linear algebra" but all we do are theoretical proofs. He's also a fairly harsh grader, homeworks and exams are difficult.

I enjoyed Professor Catani's class. He's a tough grader, but he gives you a fair warning early in the class. The homework was time-consuming, but it helped apply what was being taught. The lectures were interesting and well paced to make ample use of class time. I would recommend this professor if you don't mind working for a good education.

Comment:
Very tough class, homeworks are very challenging and the book isn't the best. With that said Cattani makes the class very fair with scales and manageable tests if you study. Hardest class I've taken so far at UMass, however Cattani is a very thoughtful and knowledgable professor. Don't let the tough homeworks get you down.

great guy. Does a good job explaining the small details. However grades very hardly. Which makes sense for an introductory proof class. Learned a lot from him and made me want to continue to study math. There is a decent scale applied at the end. Handwriting leaves something to be desired(cursive).

Good professor, but does not scale much. Average was in the 50s and that was a C, for a 500 level honors class. Hard material, does not meet outside of scheduled office hours. Assigns a lot of work, 15 or so problems for homework, each taking more than an hour.

While Cattani might have been bad in the past, he must have improved tremendously. He's my favorite professor, super nice and always around if you need help. Responds to emails instantly. The class was hard but he made it interesting.

Challenging, engaging, enthusiastic instructor. Has great command of the subject matter -- you can never stump this guy. Goes out of his way to schedule extra time, help hours, etc. In return for the great instruction, expect a very challenging course.

Very hard class, difficult to understand his accent and the material was very tough. Cattani's a nice guy though and tries to help if you ask him, just not very good at it if you haven't already had a bazillion graduate calc classes...

Comment:
Cattani may be a good teacher in his native language. However, his accent is hard to grasp, he stands in front of what he writes, and the material is too hard for a teacher who can't really teach in english
