A really warm person once you get past the intimidation. She is super knowledgeable and will help you succeed if you want to succeed. My favourite teacher so far, she really helps you learn what the topic is.

If you do not take lots of time out of your schedule to study for her class, you are doomed, point blank, FOCUS ON ORDER, NOT MEANING. You need to be diligent with the material that she gives you and study it inside and out, stay organized, do it EXACTLY HOW SHE DOES IT, and you should be fine.

Malcolm is intelligent, but she is very scattered and extremely rude. Lectures are heavy, dull, and boring. Assignments are not explained properly, yet are marked harshly. Clearly does not care about students' wellbeing or right to understand what is going on. Very unfair and upsetting. Avoid

I have never received lower than an A in all my four years at U of w. I received a D in her class. Terribly unfair marker and extremely rude and not helpful at all. Do not take a class with her!!!! Horrible person and horrible teacher

If you're not interested in the material, you are doomed. Took syntax with her in a month-long course, and she built from the basic to the complex very nicely. Assignments, homework, lectures etc can get to be a lot so I suggest to be very organized and use all the resources she gives you.

Horrible professor. She has very unclear expectations when handing out assignments and does not spend enough time explaining what will be on exams. Very rude and disrespectful, has made many students cry and shows absolutely no mercy when students are struggling. Gives only a few examples and expects students to know what to do on tests. AVOID HER.

Karen is a phenomenal prof. She is passionate about your learning but does not suffer fools. I took a 3 hour/week class with her and was invigorated the whole way through! Assignments are tough (you need to show up to every class) but the learning opportunities are well worth the hard work! Easily one of the best courses of my degree!

Comment:
- Is not clear - Gives a research paper, early in class time - The big paper at the end of the class is really hard because we barely practiced doing long and detailed lexical analysis, we spent more time talking about material from the book (which is only relevant on the midterm and final) - Comments on papers aren't nice if paper isn't an A

Avoid, avoid, avoid. Incredibly unclear on what's expected on assignments. Furthermore, stuck in the Stone Age in regards to class materials. Relies completely on textbook, lecture is completely verbal so you better take good notes or you're done for, and no use of Nexus for anything. Overall, not helpful, confused/babbly lectures, and unclear.

I don't understand why everyone on here has had such a rough time with Malcolm. I took a one month Syntax course with her and found she made all points from her own textbook clear and concise. She expects you to work hard and pushes you the extra mile, but I found it was well worth it in the end. Outside of class, she was helpful and compassionate.

Malcolm is very intelligent, however scattered. Very passionate about her work/research which is admirable and keeps you engaged when the subject matter is boring. Be prepared for her tests. They are difficult, but if you do the homework they're doable. I went and saw her for clarification in her office hours quite a few times, definitely paid off.

Karen Malcolm's class is what I'd like to call a GPA killer. She isn't aware of what she wants from you or the class. She will instruct you to do something and when you do it, she gets mad. She doesn't give concise instructions and judges you when you give your opinion. Also she rambles tons and has a horrible rubric. Get rid of her asap

Passionate and well rounded--willing to explain and very knowledgable. Doesn't suffer fools--try hard and don't try to pass off second rate work--sh'ell nail you on it. You'll get better marks if youthink outside the box.

She is not a great religion prof and has a really weird marking standard that she does not explain at all. Warning to any who are considering taking Phil of Yoga with her, she is really vague and honestly the material is also really boring.

The worst instructor I've ever had. I took this class as an elective because the description sounded interesting & I like religion courses but this was awful. She knows her material really well but doesn't know how to teach it. She has zero marking rubric & won't explain your assignment grades at all. Doesn't answer emails.

Took her class last year, she is brilliant and interesting but also very scattered and not trustworthy. She gave out the final exam questions prior to but then combined several of them for the actual exam and expected you to remember tiny details. If you can quote a text with a million details then you can do well in this class.
