Prof Cohen was constantly supportive throughout the 3 classes I took with him. With each progressive class I was required to work on fine tuning my research and was given broader topics to cover. If you are dedicated and show active interest he'll be willing to submit your papers to conferences and discuss future opportunities further with you.

Best Grad Professor I ever had. He cares so much for his students, takes his time to meet with them, and makes sure you are graded fairly. He would drop everything help a student. Also, "knowledge, knowledge, knowledge!" Things he taught were valuable and useful, no matter what field one ends up in...

Most unhelpful professor I have ever had the misfortune of knowing. He gives you past student papers to base yours off of, using them as a substitute for his own perspective and leaving little room for a paper that deviates from the formula he gives. Caught up in his own intellectualism, or maybe he resents having to teach undergrads.

Well, I did really love the class. But it was hard to get any help from Cohen- I went to office hours and he wasn't even there! True to other reviews, classes were long and filled with him stopping the movie in many, many places. Sometimes after 2 seconds. Didn't mind so much, but others may. It was the inability to reach him that really got to me.

One of the worst professors. Asks you to watch the movies before class just so you can watch them again in class. He pauses the movie nonstop and injects it with his meaningless commentary. "Good Cut". "Look at this Scene". "Excellent music". You just listen to his worthless opinions. Two 10-page essays. You don't need to do the reading.

Pretty cool. It's intimidating at first because he uses a lot of his own jargon & the idea of writing 10 page papers is unappealing but it's not a difficult class. He treats you like a grown up & expects you to take an interest in film. Attending class is a pleasure, the papers are not scary once you get started & the pages fill easily.

Attendance mandatory, grade based on two 10 page papers which are extremely time consuming, but not difficult. This class was incredibly interesting and it has made me view movies completely different. Its analytical, he breaks down scenes and shots like a piece of literature or poem to see passed whats on the surface. Papers must be analytical

Very interesting class. You will never watch a film the same way after taking this class. Cohen is smart and analyze films like science. Whole grade is based on 2 papers, and I think he give everybody A's and some B's in the end. Highly recommended!

A really nice, helpful professor. I enjoyed his class even though it was a three hour class. He's extremely smart and literate in film but doesn't intimidate you because of his welcoming personality. I would highly recommend the professor and class.

The last person is right. DON'T BUY THE BOOKS. Though, I'll still possibly use the Freud books for future reference! Anyway, Cohen is intelligent, but I found myself snoring through the 3-hour class. It was painful. I think he gives everyone an A though in the end. Just give an honest effort. I only watched one of the films. :)

DO NOT BUY THE BOOKS. I cannot emphasize this enough. over 100 bucks in books and I didn't open one. Other than that, interesting professor who knows his stuff, his 3 hour lectures can get pretty monotonous, but overall very easy going on structure of final paper. As long as you participate and have something insightful to say he'll love you.

i'll admit that his class wasn't exactly easy. there was a lot of work (2x ~12 page essays and heavy reading) but the professor makes writing the papers bearable as he's lenient when it comes to HOW you write/format your paper. the class was 3 hours long but it nicely managed to escape the realm of completely boring. ultimately aced the class.

The Woody Allen of theory profs. He can be hard to understand, and he'll quote stuff you've never heard, but not in arrogance but rather in treating students as equals. His courses are the best way to learn how films are 'built' within the frame, and you learn to respect quality films even if you don't like them. He's a rare gem of a prof to find.

Good professor with an interesting teaching style that I actually find engaging. Other students may be put off by him talking all the time but I'm glad to take his class because other classes I take students talk too much and they don't say anything. I'd rather listen to a professor than some wanna be student

One of the WORST professors I ever have, despite the fact that I am an A student. He likes to talk for the whole class by HIMSELF.His EGO is BIG like the universe, and he has a tendency to be a ****. I don't understand why such a progressive department can have someone like him. I would avoid him if you can. I look forward to his retirement more.

Awesome guy. Fun classes, that can sometimes get a little boring. Great discussions in the class sometimes though. Papers are a little confusing and time consuming, but usually turn out decently. This guy picks mostly great films, and really cares about his student's in the class, instead of blowing them off.

"Postmodern ANGST Film" Professor has his moments. Will stop on a dime to point out **** in a film with his laser pointer. Makes you read horrible artsy ass novels which are comprised of 100 pages of some French **** describing the shadow falling across a table.

Lectures are nothing, assignments are not explained, don't even know what I was supposed to learn in the class. Made stupid jokes, cracked himself up. Watch out for his over use of the laser pointer, gets distracting
