A wonderful prof who cares about the material and is excellent at facilitating discussion. I learned a lot and also felt supported in pursuing my own lines of inquiry. He is also a truly caring person. Favourite class of grad school.

Mark is a great prof who is passionate about what he teaches. The class was not my favourite thing in the world because of all the theory, which was never my strong point to begin with, but Mark made it bearable. I would definitely would want to have him as a prof again, just maybe not for this course.

Although I found the class itself pretty boring it was easy. It would be very hard for you to fail/get lower than a B. He is very kind and accommodating. The amount of reading is high but he is understanding if you haven't done it. Only complaint would be his vocabulary, mine isn't as extensive so google was my best friend during the lectures.

Mark is a nice guy, but this class is incredibly boring, to me at least. If you love book history and printing presses, you will get along fine, but students there for the requirement tend to get buried in the immense amount of readings.

He's a very cool guy, but his assignments can be somewhat tough for people who aren't very creative. Some of the texts he used for the class were pretty dry, but he gives a lot of freedom for the assignments and essays. He marks pretty hard and you have potential to lose marks if you're ideas don't align with his.

Comment:
Extremely tough professor. He assigned a ridiculous amount of readings for every class, and the material was difficult to get through. Every lecture had him standing at the front, just talking continuously. He's really intelligent, but if you're not willing to put a lot of effort into his class, you'll probably encounter difficulties.

Dr. Simpson is incredibly friendly and very approachable. He's extremely helpful during office hours. His lectures are chock-full of extremely high vocabulary words, so his lectures might be difficult if English isn't your first language. Otherwise, his class is delightful. He is highly encouraging of classroom debate. Great class!

Dr. Simpson has a way of making his students feel confident and never shuts a student?s ideas down. He also carefully considers students? ideas, both in class discussions and in papers, and gives extensive and constructive feedback. Both the material studied in his class and his lectures were very interesting.

Very friendly and enthusiastic. Essay topics were somewhat dense and challenging, but I felt the papers were graded fairly and not too harshly. Offered all students a free one-week extension on paper of their choice, which I thought was pretty generous.

Mark is extremely knowledgeable not only about pieces of literature, but about their context and relevance. The grade on my first essay bruised my ego, but I grew exponentially as a writer in his class and he was more than willing to help in the writing process. His sarcastic wit kept me interested and the lit studied was offbeat and interesting.

Dr. Simpson has been super helpful in essay writing strategies, as well as having unbelievable talent in explaining weird, obscure "english" terminolgy related to this course. Lots of my friends quit english after their first year, but he has definatly played a role in my continuing on in this field! I would recomend him to anyone

Dr. Simpson's most admirable quality is his ability to explain incredibly complex interpretations in layman's terms. He is wonderfully insightful, as well as extremely approachable and knowledgable, and his teaching style is an inspiration to all those who believe that English has greater social and political relevance. I highly recommend him.

No one is as great as Mark Simpson thinks he is. Boring classes and lectures. You'll get an A if you wear/bring one of the following to class: "buddy holly" glasses, hemp clothing, right wing propaganda.

One of the worst profs I have ever dealt with. Very unapproachable and condescending. The only thing "genius" about Simpson is his ability to rehash common ideas and make them seem like he came up with them. 5 years behind contemporary criticism on American Lit. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!

I really enjoyed working with Dr. Simpson on my honors tutorial. He is an exceedingly competent professor, quirky in a delightful way, and confident enough in himself to allow his students to reach conclusions that differ from his own.

Excellent, engaging professor. Made 19thc American lit an area I would pursue in more upper-level classes.
