Comment:
The class itself isn't always very interesting, the main topics being computer ethics and history, along with learning about internships. Professor Grissom himself is very enthusiastic, and could've easily made the class miserable. His class discussions are usually entertaining, however he does call on random students occasionally.

Comment:
He does a pretty decent job with CIS290 despite how pointless the class is. 290 was really a mix of computing history readings and learning common sense in the work place. If you have an internship already or something in the CIS field this class will seem extremely useless. Also, he is pretty poor with emails, sometimes taking days to respond.

I would have to disagree with the other postings regarding CIS 290. Yes it sucks the class is worth 3 credits now, but that is out of his control and he did a good job making class funny and entertaining for the content required. Although there were definitely a lot of assignments, he was a fair grader and accessible outside of class.

The hardest part about this class was convincing myself to show up. Honestly just a complete waste of everyone's time and money, especially now that its 3 credits. With that being said, Scott did his best at polishing this turd of a class.

Attendance is mandatory. Tests are quite challenging. This class in particular was extremely boring and a waste of time. They should have kept it a one credit course.

Scott's an overall great professor! He is really funny and likes to make you laugh. All the assignments are on Top Hat or Code org. Don't worry about this being hard. He lets you be very creative and wants you to succeed. There is one paper and it is super easy. I think there are two group projects and many partner assignments but overall it's fun.

This is a fairly difficult class. It seems like there are two things always going on, projects and textbook, and they don't always support each other. Prof Grissom is very demanding in his requirements, but grades fairly and is extremely helpful, coming in on his off time to help with projects, even on Sundays. He tries to make the class fun.

The projects will take a lot of time and troubleshooting. An easy way to lose points is to not adhere to GVSU's java style, so make sure your comments and indentation is correct before submitting. The online textbook participation counts for like 5%, I stupidly stopped about half-way through and would've had a A- if I didn't

I couldn't have asked for a better professor to introduce me to coding. He made java simple and he sparked my passion for coding. For Halloween he dressed up and did magic tricks. Tests were tough since they were handwritten code and the labs were just online exercises. Take if you want to learn.

So let me start out by saying Grissom is no pushover. His class is hard. His tests are harder. His projects are not always clear. Now for the good. He will bend over backward to help during office hours. He will use his own free time to come in and help with projects. No other teacher Ive had at GV puts the effort in that Grissom does for his class

He was visiting Canterbury Uni for a semester. He taught us nothing, relied on the textbook and Youtube tutorials, and simply provided TopHat quizzes in class to check if we had read the book. The questions were specific to the book, rather than the topic area. He calls this 'peer instruction' but doesn't augment it with actual lectures.

Expects you to self teach from the book a lot. Exams were hand written code and very difficult. Offered after class help sessions for projects that were very very helpful!

Expects you to teach yourself from the book, which by the way isn't clear. Spent most of time googling solutions to projects.

This guy is awesome. He makes you want to come class and read what's assigned afterwords. He turns something that can be difficult and boring like code into something fun and pretty east.

Tries very hard to make class fun/enjoyable. Seems to be fair across skill levels of students. Puts in extra time (meeting students on the weekend) to help out with projects
