The class was very challenging for me and I truly had to work for my grade. The Kahoots are awesome. Pay attention to the questions! Prof Staves is a great option for this class. Without him, I would not have gotten the grade I did. Go to his office hours! The week of finals, he scheduled a 1 on 1 with me for an hour and a half! 10/10 recommend:)

It was a brewing class and it was awesome. Prof. Staves knows the craft (pun intended) and enjoys teaching it. It was a summer course so it was quick, which was unfortunate because I could have easily gone a full semester in that class. Choose it for your Issues course. Best decision you will make as an undergrad

I had him for bio 120. The tests were hard and his powerpoints are straight from the book. He skips over multiple slides and hes hard to follow along with. I got a B- and wanted a better grade for a 4 credit class so Im taking it this year and I have an A. Avoid him for bio

I took CMB155 my freshman year, actually the first year the course was offered. I hate lectures, especially at 8:30 in the morning, but he made the lectures enjoyable. He is very funny and a fan of kahoot. When I was struggling with his class, it was very easy to set up a time to meet with him and he was incredibly helpful. I 200% recommend Staves.

Mark isn't as bad as people say. I went into the class very scared by all of these comments. Just study your notes throughly and you'll do fine. I got an A in this class. His tests are in depth but if you just study the material and know concepts connect you'll do great!!

I took CMB 350, Foundations in Brewing course with Dr. Staves and absolutely loved it! He is very knowledgable and interactive with all students, truly wants you to understand and succeed. This was the fourth semester of the course offered and Im so glad I was apart of it.

You will go the whole semester without knowing your grade. He is a 400 level professor, so when teaching an intro class, he assumes you know everything and doesn't explain things well. He won't answer any of your questions, he has other students answer them for you. Tests are impossible.

Would skip over multiple slides at a time and say we already talked about it. Information we discussed in class didn't really go with exams. For a general bio class, he made the concepts really hard to understand

Prof Staves is a nice guy but he is way above a basic introductory level Bio class. Every lecture he would skip many slides and we would fall behind. The exams are very different and the questions then things discussed in lecture.

He seems like a pretty knowledgeable and nice guy, he's just awful at teaching an introductory class. Lectures are very confusing and he usually skips past slides very quickly. He seems to think the class already knows all the material that is being covered. I'd take him for higher level classes, but not intro!

Comment:
This classed literally killed me. Bio120 was horrible. I missed lecture once a month at most, and I am still failing. He refuses to compile a review or an outline for exams, which stinks because it's the only grades you get. No hw to offset bad exams. The exams don't pertain to anything you learn, last exam everyone failed well below a 40%

If you get him as a BIO 120 professor, I would suggest switching out. I have shown up to every lecture and study and still cannot understand many of the questions on his exams. Does not give out any worksheets to help us practice like other professors do. Teaches us as though we know higher level biology.

I love this professor! Hands down one of the best CMB profs at GV. He's very kind, and his lectures are very informative, but all his material is in the lectures. Do NOT skip his class. He's always got a great story to share and has a real enthusiasm for the subject. He makes you want to come back each day even at 8 AM. For 2 hours.

Dr. Staves was very laid back and helpful in lab. He is very patient with his students and really hilarious. The class work is pretty for a 400 level lab course; expect notebooks and papers. 8am lab wasn't so bad with a professor as easy going as him!

is great at explaining everything. has very good examples and stories for subjects. at first you may be turned off by him, but then you understand his teaching methods and you will love him. when he says the tests are made from the notes believe him 100%. Tests are from notes! study your notes and take good ones and you will do great.

Great Prof. Very helpful. I took the class in the summer so it was ver compressed and never had any problems keeping up. Studying was minimal and just from notes. Easy grader and even gives extra credit on tests. you can ask questions on the exams and he may even help you. Take his class!
