Hard to follow. Paid tutor is the only way I got through. Just because he invented nutrasweet and gets the university grant money and research funding doesn't mean he is a good teacher and doesn't mean you learn anything from his classes

Comment:
Extremely poor instructor. Teaches exclusively out of his required notebook. The notebook would be great as a supplement, but is horrible as the main teaching media. NMR and spectroscopy tables memorization on equipment 90% of the students will never use is a waste of time. Lectures are monotone and boring at best.

Gives decent lecture notes at least, they are worthless if you don't come to class though. His tests are brutal. Class averages ranged of tests ranged from 40-27 percent. Bouns problems will help alot. I would rather take ochem from someone else.

The last exam average was 39/150. Many rely on paid tutors to re-explain the material so that we can understand it, ask questions, and learn techniques for solving problems. We have to memorize table values for NMR, Spectr., pKa's, and rely on "chemical intuition" to figure problems. No exam study sheet or tables avail. Some Extra Credit--do it!

looks like steven spielberg.. worst teacher ever. does not explain notes well. if you ask questions he either says i want you to think about it ill get to it later (and he wont) or he will find a way to completely avoid the question. exams are impossible. average for 3rd test was 47 out of a 150 points. roughly 30%

ugh. there is nothing about this man that makes organic chemistry even remotely interesting. he likes to ramble on and on...say we dont need to know all that he just said, and then test us on it anyway. he asks us to "think about it" but then never explains difficult concepts. he's pretty terrible

He's not a bad guy... I keep telling myself this, over and over again. I try so hard to see the good in him. I know its there... but lets face it, he's not an easy teacher. Do the bonus problems, keep hope even with two failing exam grades, FIGHT ON! you can make it, just have faith. And for <explitive> sake, do the bonus problems!!! Just do them!

Get with a study group of friends. DO the practice problems. Study his OLD EXAMS. (you may have to trade with other people around study times for old exams) The first two exams are kinda based on class material, the rest you might as well not go and just study his old exams. Good luck... ... you'll need it.

I managed an A is his course, but only through a ridiculous amount of effort. He is unclear in his instruction and was unwilling to provide as much additional assistance as I would have liked.

Statues of cold stone shed more tears and show more love than this guy. But perhaps there is more to him than we see, I suspect a person underneath that cold demeanor. Anyway, do the friggin bonus problems, just do them all, there is your only hope.

His class was tough. I'm not stupid and went to most lectures. I studied my ass of, and still barely managed to get decent grades with the curve. His style of teaching is not suited to a majority of people, I would suggest taking O-chem over the summer the professors are usually better.

I get sick and tired of people criticizing the prof when the class is hard. O-chem is tough, but just because some frat boys can't CRAM four weeks of lecture the night before a test doesn't mean the teacher sucks. He has a FRICKIN study seassion each week!! But not very many people go! DeBruin is stone cold, but he WILL help you understand what he teaches. If you take his class, STUDY, go to the tutor sessions, do xtra credit. You are in college, start acting like it and quit looking for hand outs.

this teacher sucks! If you get biochem with him, I would suggest dropping the class ASAP & taking it over the summer. I can't believe they even let him teach....

He is a tough teacher but the curve rocks. GET A TUTOR!!! I once saw a glimpse of his soul when I slept in past a test and showed up with five minutes left crying my eyes out. He let me take the test in his office. I ended up with a B. It wasnt too bad.

When he was born a dark sphere came into this world and enveloped him, he has not known sun shine, he has not known the joy of laughter. The world is cold and dead to him... So yeah, have fun.
