You have to get on Dr. Grant's good side to have a positive experience in his class. He can be quite dull and makes you feel silly for answering a question incorrectly. Music Theory is second nature for me but I feel as if I would have been lost if that wasn't the case. He does offer extra help but seems to think you should just know it already.

Be prepared to teach yourself a lot of stuff. Half the class dropped out half way through the semester, but you should be able to get through if you just practice... a lot.

Have a couple of classes with him, this man is an absolute joke. He ruined the music dept and is out to ruin the lives of anyone interested even remotely in music. He will scare you out of it. DO not follow his advising you will end up way far behind and take 6+ yrs to graduate with a bachelors

Expects you to play two instruments in a semester at a high school level. Horrid, impossible final exam. Extra tutoring time is about your only option, be prepared to spend 10 hours a week in the practice room.

This is now my second semester at northern declared as a music major, not once has he kept a single appointment that i have made with him, but becuase of this and me not having any dircetion. he has "ENCOURAGED" me not to continue as a music major. If you where head of the department youd think you would want to ENCOURAGE students TO stay?

i had 101 and 102. These classes are really tough, but if you try really hard and spend alot of time practiceing then i guess you do fine, but in my case i changed my major to management, since i was failing or getting a D... in both... Good luck to all. He is a nice guy and hold help sessions on fridays...

As long as you actully try you will do fine. He is a great guy and knows exactly what he is talking about. If you don't care about what your learning and don't try he can tell. All you have to do is ask for help and he is more then willing!

He was my advisor as a music minor and told me what music electives I had to take. I needed an extra semester that he said that the book didn't. Also this socialist freak started barking political beliefs in one of my lessons about disarming America. As a card carrying member of the NRA I ask, "What does that have to do with music?"

ummm if you are a music education person you ARE a professional musician and I think you don't belong in the classroom if that is what you think of your career. I really like how he holds music education majors to the SAME HIGH STANDARD as everyone else

If he would understand that Music EDUCATION majors are there to learn to TEACH music and not be professional musicians, he would be more effective. He's lost some potentially excellent music ed students. Teaching does involve encouragement, not total belittlement!

The department of music would be much better off without this guy. He doesn't encourage students to be better, nor does he try to recruit talent into the university. To bad he has tenure, *sigh* .

Huge jerk. Unfortunately, he is also my advisor. Last semester he asked me if I was taking any liberal studies courses. I told him yes, and he asked why. I don't feel that he has done a lot to help me, but instead I leave my lesson every week angry. I don't like him.

The man is an ASS. He is so creepy, cocky and sure of himself that I can't stand him. He thinks that all that matters in life is music, and he constantly belittles his students. You don't encourage people by telling them they suck. Find another teacher if you can.

I extremely dislike Dr. Grant. If any student in the department is reading this I think you know who I am. But Dr. Grant doesn't, so that's the beauty of it. P.S. If I could give a -23 for clarity, I would.

Had the rat for several classes. Doesn't plan what he's doing before time, misses the point when you ask a question, and will turn any opportunity into a 'you suck, quit music' moment. Says the only way to be a musician is to quit all other things.
