Swarup is an all around likable professor. He takes the time to memorize everyone's names. The class requires you to read, if you don't you're pretty much screwed. Attendance is a must. You get 2 free absences and then for every one after those your grade goes down. There are also 2 or more reading summaries due every week. A lot of work but fun.

Comment:

Dr. Swarup is one of my favorite professors. I took FYS183 my first semester of college and I simply loved it. He does give a lot of homework, but if you work hard you will receive an A. He memorizes his student's names and I think that is very nice. It shows that he cares about every student. Dr. Swarup is amazing.

Swarup is a good teacher to have in the sense that he understands what first year students are going through, however the class is difficult. It involves high level reading that is hard to understand at times. Although you do go over the readings, the assignments are due before class so often times I felt confused and discouraged with my summaries

Swarup is one of the most intelligent instructors I have ever had, but he is not very well with transferring this intelligence to his students. Don't get me wrong, he shares his knowledge but does not teach it. I spent 10+ hours a week on homework, lots of high level reading. Don't take if you aren't motivated for a high level of work.

Swarup is a great guy, and the kind of person you really want in your corner as you're going through college, because you could call him up at any point with just about any problem and he would help you out. But he is not a great professor. The class was agonizing and confusing, and the whole thing felt pointless. Super mixed feelings.

Swarup made difficult concepts easy to understand. I really like chemistry after having taken his class. I wish he taught Chem 2!Great guy, really nice outside of class too. EXTREMELY helpful!!!!

Very good teacher, the class is very difficult, but he offers a lot of help and understands the difficulty of the class.He offers several demonstrations for the more difficult concepts, sets up study groups before tests and allows any tests failed tests to be made up to pass the class.

Great Chem teacher. I hated chem until Swarup. He's challenging, but helpful. He's got a respect for students that I really appreciate. I wish more professors shared the pedagogy of the ESSP professors I've met. Here it is clear that teaching is an art.
