Comment:
A musical encyclopedia and accomplished pianist. However, he severely lacks professionalism in nearly every aspect as a professor. Do not take his theory classes, he does not teach the material, does not give homework back, and does not communicate with his students (when he does he is incredibly rude and impatient).

I love Richard and treasure my conversations with him. He's so filled with insights and knowledge that it's baffling and his playing is remarkable. But as wonderful as he is in these ways, he's nearly impossible to follow in a theory class. It's all so easy for him that he doesn't understand how it isn't all obvious to everyone else.

The 3 previous comments below sound like remarks an immature musician would make. If you're so insecure about your musicianship, you should talk to a counselor rather than bring your problems here. Professor Thompson is wonderful musician and an excellent teacher. He's always willing to help and share his extensive knowledge.

If Mr. Thompson is really, really mean to you about your playing, please understand that it's just him. He's just in one of his moods. Don't get discouraged even when he is so negative.

Actually, I disagree with the person before me. Follingstad is the most disorganized. But Thompson comes pretty close. And they are both pretty moody too. Isn't it ridiculous that these people get tenures and the good teachers have to go away because of the budget cuts or simply because they are too sick of all the crap at school?

Comment:
This guy is pathetic. He stalks the piano students at the practice rooms and then goes to the other teachers to criticize their playing. He also competes with the students across the wall by trying to play their pieces faster. His classical playing sucks anyway. All it can do is put you to sleep. Absoulutely ridiculous guy.

Good class, great teacher, listen to the music and study the book and you'll do fine. I suggest paying attention in the few classes before tests as he tells you what people you need to know for the tests

He is a great jazz piano player. He really wants you to learn something from him. He is very easy going person. Tests are not made by him, so pay more attention to books than lecture.
