I had Doc for one class in the late 70s, and he remains my favorite teacher ever. Unconventional, stimulating, challenging. If the class was reluctant to participate, he and I might just discuss the topic at hand. He encouraged thinking, not recitation, and would always entertain a cogent argument of alternative viewpoint. Not ignorance, though.

By far the worst english teacher I have ever had. He's extremely critical-he wants everything does his way-he has no room to examine anyone else's point of view. He goes of on 20 minute diatribes that have absolutely nothing to do with the class. I find the fact that he has everyone calling him Uncle Jim distasteful.

My roomate warned me not to take him, but I like a challenge. I ended up loving him, his wit, charm, and intelligence. The man is brilliant. I learned so much it was worth the tough grading. I couldn't get enough. Five courses later, I'm addicted. I'm getting professional help and even sold my codpiece...Good thing I graduated.

After taking this class, I have a knew appreciation. Uncle Jim is the best professor I have ever had, and probably will ever have. I love this class. It is the only one that I look forward to going to. It's true that he is a touch grader, but this class would not be have as good if he gave away A's. Everyone should take a class with this man.

Livingston is one of the only good teachers I had at NMU. He is tough and has his own way of writing and wants you to learn correct sentence structure and grammer but you learn a lot. I've heard the other teachers for this class were a breeze and that would have been easier at the time but I am glad I had livingston. He pushed me in this class - I worked hard for the B I got and I am an A student. I wouldnt trade the experience for an A tho cuz we read some great books and had a unique teacher.

Dr. Livingston will make you work for it. But he is fair and gives everyone the opportunity to improve on a grade. The only thing he seems to want--and continue to want with sincere passion--is that people be able to write good English sentences and assigments with structure. He will never fault anyone for trying and seems to have gotten a bad rap for being tough. I really enjoyed being in his class and felt like I honestly earned the grade I got. Although I hid from other students getting lesser grades.

He is a tough grader but I learned a lot in his class. He gave me a greater understanding of Literature. The only complaint is the couch in his office. He wants you to sit below him so he feels higher than you. He does have an Ego but who doesn't? However he does not give A's.

Dr. Livingston is a treasure among the many professors at NMU. His experience as a man and an educator are rivaled by few and coveted by many. His classes are easy going and enjoyable. He presents the material as if he wrote it himself. He is flexible on deadlines, but still a tough grader.

Uncle Jim is The God of English Literature. He speaks Old English fluently and can belt out a 16th century folk-ballad with all the verve of an oversexed rockstar. If you don't "get" Uncle Jim, then you should put down that cell-phone and pick up a book.

Uncle Jim is hilarious, but brilliant. His classes and lecturers are VERY loose, but I think this is much more intersting that way. You really have to pay attention to learn, which is good: you can't just sit there, and only half try, because you won't do well. And outside of class, he's a sweet man

This class is one of the worst I've taken. He is very unclear and goes off in pointless tangents. Honestly, do not take him for any class above 200 level. He might be like, a cool guy outside of class, but...I just couldn't stand the waste of time.

He's a jerk. I loved him. A girl in my class always wrote about how she hated him and she never came to class. She got an A. He told me I couldn't write. I told him he didn't know anything about computers (more language was involved). I got a B. If you can write well. You'll pass.

he is known as being a hard prof, which he is. But, if youre smart enough to handle him, you will make it through his class. He does favor people, mainly the ones that stand out to him as being worthwhile students. You will learn a ton in his classes, and they definatley are interesting.

Ok, Dr. Livingston is not the easiest teacher and he expects a great deal from his students. But, if you can handle the extra work and his tangents, he is an amazing professor. He is interesting and helpful, a wonderful professor for those who don't mind a challenge.

He's moody at times and sometimes not very clear about what he wants from students. But he gives pretty good feedback when he gives back assignments. He was fair and gave you credit for putting a lot of effort into your writing.
