Comment:
I took numerous classes with Prof. Strauber about 20 years ago. To this day, his classes are still the best and most useful to me as a professional, even though I am not an academic or a political scientist. Learning to think is hard, which is so few people do it well. Prof. Strauber pushed me, and I'll forever be grateful.

Great with the interpretative stuff. And a great sense of humor, too. But he doesn't seem to know much about actual politics or even political science. Probably belongs in the philosophy department instead of the poli sci department.

Stimulating lectures. But the opacity of his grading criteria made the class more difficult than it should have been. Course was far more work than comparable courses that I have seen at more prestigious/selective universities. In hindsight, the class was not as well taught as the hype leads one to believe.

He SHOWED me how to think. How to synthesize knowledge. How to analyze. Yes, he's sarcastic, but overarchingly helpful & considerate. He has a FEW strict rules...so did the Garden of Eden! I felt I could express my opinions freely, as long as I SUPPORTED them. His lectures themselves r worth it. Too bad he's left!(I took his class this semester.)

Indeed sometimes nice but somewhat authoritative. He refuses to discuss his grading even he?s wrong. Every student in his class works hard, he cannot grade so harshly even though to grade strictly should be promoted. Again he is nice but I don?t think he grades students fairly and he is not so open to different political ideas some students hold

If there is one Professor every student should experience, it is Strauber. He is without peer. He is brilliant and his materials are painstakingly selected to be very useful, but not too long. Although he seems intimidating and is very sarcastic, he is actually very nice. His last semester is Spring 2008, take his class while you can!

This man is brilliant. If there is any one professor you need to take a class with, it is him. You will learn so much, and he will keep the jokes coming the whole time as well. Wish I could take Intro again.

He's a great lecturer. Plus, the class's materials are without match. It's hard to get him during office hour though. He has little office time. But he's really helpful and not intimidating at all.

Definitely take him if you have a chance. Will be hard but it isnt impossible and its one of the best classes I've ever taken. He is very encouraging one on one and helpful. Im not a P.S. major and I still managed to 'survive' and do well in his intro class- im tempted to even take him again.

If I could be someone intellectually, I would be Ira Strauber. He did not actually fail a whole tutorial- that's a rumor. He IS tough as the dickens but my writing has improved immensely...he's probably hard to take if you don't like criticism though. Lectures were amazing. Take a class with Ira Strauber. It's a very pleasant punch in the face.

Probably the best professor at Grinnell. His courses are tough, but your analytical and critical thinking skills will be improved tremondously. If you are taking Intro. I strongly recommend his course.

Lectures are great - engaging and informative, really make you think. He doesn't think it's a problem with him/the test when the entire class fails, though. Has completely different expectations than any other prof, which are often indecipherable. Day-to-day classes are great, exams make you want to kill yourself.

Gives amazing lectures. His 2 hr classes fly by faster than most 1 hr classes I've taken. His grading can seem unfair but if you follow his instructions and don't try to do stuff your own way, you will do fine. Teaches you how to really analyse readings but doesn't assign too much to reading.
