One of the most loveable professors I've ever had. The class is a good amount of reading but it's interesting and makes you think outside the box. Professor Kirby always has good suggestions and ideas and gives helpful feedback on the papers. He is also always willing to help. Also super kind & funny.

Kirby is a professor who really cares about students. He's hilarious and his classes are always fun and laid-back, but you always get things out of them and grow as a poet. He's super supportive and really wants to see his students succeed. Easily the best professor I've had at FSU.

Kirby is a legend, wacky in the best way possible. If you want to be a better poet, hes the professor to take. He gives good criticism, but also seems to focus in on telling you what youre doing right and how to further that. His class is unlike any other, guaranteed.

Kirby is without a doubt the best professor I have had at FSU so far; you would be lucky to have him teach you at least once. This class is heavy on reading, but the entire class is discussion based so if you have an opinion on whatever the topic is, participation comes easy.

Fantastic mentor. The first advice he gave me was in an email before the class even started, and he fundamentally changed how I've written for years. He is able to point out the strong and weak points in your pieces. Take his advice to heart, and you are sure to progress. Be prepared to sing.

I took Kirby for an IFS class, "the Role of the Public Intellectual." The class itself was whatever, but Kirby is awesome. 10/10 would take another class with him.

Kirby is a hilarious man, and is truly intelligent in his field. He can be an intellectual elitist at times, and is flagrant about his personal biases. If you just read all of the required materials, show up to class and participate, and actually try on the papers you'll get an A.

The Kirb is the man to study with if you hope to publish poetry at some point. He gives great stylistic and structural advice. If he tells you that he really likes one poem of yours and you ought to write more like that, do it. Those poems are the ones you're most likely to get in print.

He takes a little getting used to... hint: read his poetry (like his collected poems, The House on Boulevard Street) before taking his class and he'll make much more sense! :-) Overall, fabulous; wish I wasn't graduating so I could take more of his classes!

oh, kirby. he tries to keep the class entertained, but at the same time maintains quite the serious work effort. he's a decent guy and he writes some damn good poetry. gives lots of handouts, but not so much feedback unless you actively seek it...also, has strong opinions. kind of a foodie, so talk about restaurants with him and he'll light up.

Kirby is amazing! Because of him, I fell in love with poetry. Now an MFA poet at FIU, I miss the days of Kirby's anecdotal on pop culture. Since graduating FSU, my friendship with David has blossomed. I still consider him a powerful mentor on me and my writing. I highly recommend taking Kirby, especially if you despise poetry like I did.
