Professor Ruck is such a kind man with so much insight. He's really interested in sharing his knowledge and listening to his students' perspectives. Stimulated great conversations. Would totally take another class from him, I look forward to talking to him and getting a break in between long, monotone lectures.

I know he gets a bad reputation because he loves his mushrooms. He is an old man, yes he's 84! But honestly, if you actually pay attention and listen to what he has to say youll realize he is truly a genius. You can leave his class with so much knowledge. He sets clear guidelines for expectations and gives you creative freedom.

Prof. Ruck is by far the worst professor I've had at Boston University. Instead of teaching the material, he babbles on and on about his beloved mushroom religion. If you are truly into Greek mythology and don't mind going to a lot of office hours and doing a lot of extra studying, take this class. But if you're trying to get your GPA up, STAY AWAY

He is a horrible person, cares much more about himself than about his students' learning, and lacks any empathy. Expect no help from this professor even if you have a valid BU accepted reason, and be ready to be exposed to classes in which instead of learning about mythology, but what you'll hear are his ramblings on entheogenics and their use.

A lot of people dislike him, but it's a really interesting class. Do the readings and you'll be okay.

Even after a good night's sleep, I dozed off during his ramblings about mushrooms. He is extremely disorganized. He is convinced he is a good professor even though the class average is a C+ and belittles those who do not do well on his exams. He is excruciatingly difficult to meet with and very unaccommodating. Stick to reading the assignments.

Professor Ruck is an engaging speaker and very clear and direct in his teaching style. He is very laid back, but he is also possesses a WEALTH of knowledge regarding Latin literature and grammar if you put forth the extra effort to pay attention to him. He only gave 2 tests in my class, neither of which even counted towards my grade.

NOT the class you expect it to be. Instead of actually teaching about mythology, he sells you his own theories about sex and mushrooms. To him, everything in mythology either represents sex or drugs. Tons of reading, but you don't need to do most of it. Two exams, lots of terms, easy enough if you study the night before.

I had Ruck for Latin verse (part of the CAS lang. requirement - he also teaches Latin prose.) I got a 44/100 on the first test and it counted as a B-. A B-, PEOPLE. I never prepared my translations, skipped 5 classes, and didn't study for a single test. I got a B+ overall in the class. Basically, he grades on a curve that would make J.Lo jealous.

BY FAR THE COOLEST PERSON EVER AND THE COOLEST SUBJECT. but this class is a insane. Extemely specific, too much reading and too much stuff in general to study. 2 test only. No hw, no discussion, no lab, no nothing, only lectures. TAKE AT YOUR OWN RISK

I graduated BU 7 years ago and still talk about Professor Ruck's classes. He provides a fascinating view of various modern movies and literature in connection with his theories regarding mythology and the anima/animus. I enjoyed his lectures immensely. Because of him, I became an Ancient Civilization minor.

Yeah...he really does only talk about mushrooms like everyone says. His exams can seem ridiculous but they're not impossible, you just have to do a lot of reading. The second exam is easier than the first.

If you are taking this class to fulfill reqs, you would be better off taking something else. Definately don't take it to get better understanding of myth. Only teaches his own crackpot theories. You will have to read upwards of eight books to do well on the exams, and even then you will see stuff on there that was not in lecture or the readings.

Terrible class. The tests are want you to identify people he may have mentioned once in passing and ask questions that don't apply to the context of the plays he has you read. He's talks more about mushrooms and psychedelics than he does actual greek mythology. Don't take this unless you are a classics major.

Definitely don't take this class if you want to learn Greek and Roman Mythology. His tests were really hard despite what he says all semester about them being easy. He loves to talk about mushrooms in a stoner way. Most of the reading is on mushrooms. Try and stay away if you can. It's a really boring class and not worth your time!

Ruck loves to talk on and on about mushrooms in a stoner persona... boring to listen to him. Tests would not have been difficult for me if I would have studied everything that was in the text (even then I would have gotten a few wrong because they weren't in the text). DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS

Comment:
His explanations of grammar were very focused on origins of forms and why they are translated as they are, which was both interesting and extremely helpful for my understanding of the language. I had to spend a lot of time on the work, but my understanding and basic reading ability improved enormously.
