I love these periods of history but class lectures were so boring. Exams are all on lectures so if you don't take good notes, you wont do well (and he does not give study guides). You really only need the books for quote id's but he reads them out loud in class so you don't need to buy them.

He assigns readings every week, but the tests are based entirely on the class notes and quotes from various authors, not the readings. You don't need the Western Civilization: Brief History V2 book unless you plan to do the extra readings. The tests are hard, and you absolutely cannot cram for them. You NEED to start studying several days before.

Dr. Swietek is a peach of a man. He is helpful outside of class but keeps it short and sweet. His lectures are intense but worthwhile, especially compared to most other professors at University of Dallas.

Very interesting lectures. Made me want to get out of bed for this early class, haha. I liked the narrative-style lectures, always kept my interest. It's tempting to not do the reading, but it is essential to success in the class. Tests are short but difficult. You definitely cannot "cram" for them. He made me work and actually learn the material.

Good lecturer but tests are very challenging. I studied for a long time for all the tests and never got higher than a B+. The tests are short and completely objective so you pay for what you miss.

Good lecturer. Assigns too much reading and there is no class participation whatsoever. His tests are moderately difficult. Overall a decent course.

His lectures are good because it's almost like a story. I thought they were always very interesting. The tests however for extremely hard for me, especially the quote IDs. There are a lot of people to go over which means a lot of possible answers for the quotes. It was hard, but an enjoyable class.

Lectures are good and usually pretty interesting. Write down everything he says. Tests are hard. Your whole grade is based solely on the 3 tests, so make sure you study. Loved the class, hated the tests.

A wonderful teacher that you all will miss once you leave UD. His speaks extremely authoritatively on a myriad of historical subjects and his jokes are often missed by most but if gotten are hilarious.

I loved his classes, I'm not gonna lie, I got a B in his class, but it was because I did not study enough, and certainly not a failing on his part. In fact he did just about everything possible, all of this stuff about him not being available is just people whining because they do not want to get up early. He is a fair teacher, but study hard!

Definitely one to take. He obviously loves the material and knows it inside and out, lectures are fun and interesting, and exams are a breeze if you read and go to class.

One of the best profs at UD-better than Hanssen. Very straight forward class and tests. All lecture, make sure you take very good notes (basically write down everything he says, esp. small details. Do not miss class-You'll regret it. For the test, know EVERYTHING and you will get an "A". Don't do all the reading-just know what he quotes.

All lecture. Seems a bit boring at first, but he's really good once you get used to his style. Always willing to help outside of class. He tests entirely on lecture. Know your quotes or you *will* bomb the tests. If you study your notes well, the tests will be a piece of cake (I finished the final in 15 minutes - and I made an A).

Great lecturer, but his tests (there are three of them, which are also the only grades in the class), are pure memorization of facts and quotes. I enjoyed the class time, but hated his exams.

Hardest part of the class was getting up at 8am. Interesting lectures. No discussion, although he always offered to answer questions. Midterms are dominated by material from your notes and source book. You have no homework; bring your books to class and he will point out to you what text you need to know. Easy A! Good if you like mornings.

A straight lecture course, very good for such an enormous survey as West Civ II. Easy, objective tests with no essay, just know your facts. Take good notes and read the quotes from the source book and you'll be fine. Don't miss class!!! Covers a TON in just one class and you'll need your own notes.

Swietek's class may be hard, but it's definitely not boring. His lectures have a good rhythm and have great little odd tidbits/stories in them as well. Definitely a hard, but fair grader. Highly recommend Roman Republic, Roman Empire, and Ancient Greece!

If you can take Constitutional and Legal History of Medieval England from him, do it. It is not a difficult class, light reading, and it is very interesting.
