Took the online section. HORRIBLE at giving directions for assignments.. I questioned him a few times and he somehow turned it around on me. Really picky and always blaming students when HE IS THE PROBLEM. I would never take his class ever again! STAY AWAY!!

If you see his name RUN as fast as you can. He is the worst professor I have ever had. He should never be allowed to teach another class. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS YOU WILL BE SORRY.

I highly suggest that no one takes any of his classes. Worst professor I have ever had. Very picky on what needs to be done for his class, lots of reading, discussions, and ridiculous grader! He needs to keep in mind that the world does not revolve around him and that others have opinions too. This class should not be online!

Unless you're required to take this class-DONT. Hard grader, boring reading, discussion & peer review assignment every week (takes about 8-10 hours). This should be an in-person class- not online. He pushes his personal agenda, to get a good grade you have to agree with him and then he says you can add at the end "but I don't agree with this."

Took his online class..it was fairly challenging. Lot of reading required for discussions but you can do well by just skimming. Grades hard on discussions and grades easier on papers. VERY important to stay on top of your discussions every week- you lose a lot of points if you forget. I don't have a soc background at all and got a B+.

He is a very challenging teacher, which is what more of the Profs in the SOC department need to do. Unfortunately, most of the students who take SOC classes are not SOC majors and therefore don't have past academic experience in dealing with the topics. If you are a SOC major and want a challenging class take this course.

not good at communicating and makes it seem like everyone should know what they are talking about in the soc world. His discussions are very wordy, often very confusing. Hard grading, never got a good understanding of what to really do. Online class so the only way to contact him is via email, but he either took a while to respond or didnt respond

Prepare yourself for A LOT of (boring) reading. Discussion posts EVERY week via WebCT regarding the readings. Pretty hard grader. Curves grades at the end which is nice. Grades on attendance so you must go to class. Tests are essays and you can use your notes/textbook.

i would not say that he is that hardest professor i've had but pretty close to it. his notes are all over the place i don't understand why we actually have class. he grades extremely hard. if you have never taken a sociology class i do not recomend taking one with him. he assumes that everyone thinks sociologically and that isn't the case.

I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Barrett at first comes off as very difficult but if you actually read and attend the lectures you will be alright. He really tries to modify the class to the progress of the students because it is a difficult subject to begin with.

This professor is very difficult, but if you pay attention during lectures and read the text you will do fine. There is a lot of work involved with this class but he really tries to help students get through the material, but you have to speak up and ask.

Prof. Barrett is probably my favorite teacher at CSUSM so far. All the people complaining about him are just too lazy to do the readings and formulate well thought-out opinions (regardless if they agree with him or not). It's not an easy class, but the critical thinking skills I learned from Prof. Barrett have served me better than anything else.

He seems to be hard at first, but if you really try you will learn alot. go to the classes, take notes, ask questions and you will pass the tests, which are essays. you do need to read, and if you are a slow reader, it will be tough. but the readings are on the test. this teacher challenges you to really think criticaly. if you are lazy, dont take

Don't take this class if you're a liberal studies major! He has something against us for some reason. If he doesn't like your opinion, he doesn't like you. I would NOT suggest him to ANYONE... and I have no idea how I was lucky enough to get a B-!!!

There's no real structure in his lecture. It's hard to take notes. Read the assigned reading. Do not fall behind. The class does require a lot of work, but you'll get to appreciate it. There's a lot of reading and analysis. If you don't like to read...don't take the class. He's appropriate eventhough he doesn't seem like it.

Oh My God,,, this class is hard! Quant would be hard enough if the instructor was trying, but this guy's not! Not much instruction, no help, text is very abstract, it might as well be astrophysics, I don't have a clue.

I think he is very willing to let people have an opinion that differs from his, as long as you back it up with some reason other than just following the stereotypes that have been ingrained in our society. I actually responded to a reading by saying, "this is the biggest load of crap I have ever read." I also told him why and still got an A.
