Definitely do not suggest anyone to take this class. Lectures do not make any sense at all. His tests are very confusing and hard to pass. Attendance is not mandatory, all of the powerpoints are online. He claims we need the textbook, but you don't its a waste of money. Worst class

This class is based only on 4 exams. You don't get any credit for attendance so no point in going to class unless you plan to participate. He makes the lectures confusing and the exams were pretty hard. Got a 70 on all of them and they're only around 30 questions. There is a lot of memorization needed. Stressed to get the book, but I never used it.

I took Shapiro for Philosophy 130 for a gen ed credit and while I would take him again I would not take this class again. While Shapiro is a great person to talk to, he is not organized and most of your grade will come from the three exams and your final. However, if you participate in discussions you will receive some extra credit.

Shapiro is a good choice for PHIL 130. His tests are hard to understand and he makes his lectures more confusing than they need to be. I wouldn't take this professor again. It is clear where he stands on the ethical issues in the coursework and will shoot down anyone who disagrees with him.

Professor Shapiro is an excellent teacher. Had him in an Honors section and it was one of the best classes I've had at WVU. Truly cares about the material and the students' success. Tests are moderately hard but very manageable with some studying. Material is interesting but not exhilarating. Solid A or B with some effort.

He is great conversation facilitator. If you go to class you'll learn more than reading. Tests are hard but not impossible.

Worst class I've taken at WVU thus far. Shapiro is incredibly opinionated. He grades hard and especially hard if you disagree with him. He doesn't organize his ecampus or slides well, and even if you think you've studied them well you still fail his tests. Only enjoyable part about this class was not having to buy textbooks. Should not be a prof.

Shapiro is a really engaging guy. The class itself revolves more around reading and analyzing arguments made in essays more so than discussing the topic itself. He can be pretty subjective at times, which is frustrating, but overall he's an awesome guy and the class is easy if you pay attention and study a little before each test.

Interesting class. H is very into what he teaches. I hardly ever went to class, but the night before each exam I just crammed by reading all of the readings and reviewing the posted notes and did well. If you go to class and pay attention youll do fine and itll be easy. If not do what i did, youll have a couple long nights studying but will do fine

The only class I have ever dropped out of. I asked him for advice on my rough draft and he made me write a completely new paper on a new topic because "it wasn't fair to grade only my paper ahead of time." And he still made me rewrite the old paper. I worked really hard and he told me it was in the "low B range."

The material is pretty dry, but he makes the class a lot more interesting than it would be otherwise. The tests are ridiculously easy - he gives you a study sheet prior to the exam which includes topics and essay questions that may be on the test, so all you have to do is memorize that and he's an easy grader.

Although sometimes odd, Dr. Shapiro is one of my favorite teachers at WVU. The class in entertaining and brings up some very important questions. He does take attendance but the notes are posted online so missing class won't kill you. He goes over the material before the test so if you have a basic idea of the arguments you'll do fine.

He's a nice person. But you have to pay attention to the reading. The test are hard, and he repeats things a lot. It's probably not my favorite class. But it could be worse

Shapiro is an intelligent guy, but sometimes, I found his teaching method too chaotic due to lack of control. Though I truly, genuinely like him, I learned more from the readings than I did from the lectures (mainly because they were repetitive). Also, the soc/poli theory title is misleading. The class should be called "The Welfare State" instead.

Bad class. Will only give multiple choice exams for this class because there are 'too many students' to check essay exams. Not very helpful. He just repeats the same thing over and over again thinking that will help you. Overall, a very poor class when compared to other Phil 130's.

This guy is a GREAT teacher. Explains everything very well...don't expect any surprise exam questions. It's all based on the readings and material covered in class. He's also funny, friendly, and more than willing to help.
