Comment:
One of the best professors I've ever had throughout my 5 years at UBC. Keep in mind that this man is an expert in bioinformatics and UBC should NOT have made him teach basic computer science (i.e. CPSC101). Take 4th year bioinformatics with him and you will not regret it. Best thing is a 20-min interview style final that was actually really fun.

Terrible prof, doesnt post info about mt or final online (basic stuff like format, what chapters are covered). Boring lectures, expects us to teach ourselves with the readings (which are off of random, outdated websites). Used 2 chapters of a $150 textbook and never touched it again. 'Teaches' us Java by telling us to copy paste bits of code.

Do not take this class. It is very difficult, and he talks down to students in class when you don't understand. You have to attend 80% of the classes or you fail! If you are looking for a simple science credit this is not your course, and it is not interesting like he says at the beginning either. Only take this is you already know HTML, Java, etc.

I took his course in my third year to make up for a missing Science pre-requisite, and I found that Hoos is the most incomprehensible professor I have ever had... Not due to his accent, but to his round-about explanations for the subject matter. And then, he's also quite dull in lecture.

it says that you don't need to have any knowledge about computer, but you will have to know from the start to HTML, Java everything..midterms and finals were HARD but you can use cheatsheet. You have to buy PRS clicker too.. lecture=boring, this course will make your life miserable if you don't know about computer.

this man seems to hate teaching; he doesn't explain anything and then puts his students down when they don't understand. do not take an intro course with him, unless you already know how to program and just want to boost your gpa. if you're a womens studies student in need of a science credit (like i was) take something else.

Very very strange individual. He was very nice but is psycho paranoid when it comes to exam rules and cheating. The class was ridiculously mislabelled. It should have been called: Computer Science for people who wants to hear about Hoos' multiple digital art talents and doesn't care about women contribution to the field.

This course was more of an Arts course than a CS course. He was very slow when replying to his emails and doesn't answer all the questions asked by students. He'd always ask us to think about it first. Well, if we knew the answer, we wouldn't have needed to ask!

A very thorough and well-organized lecturer. He understands the material and can convey it simply to the students both with general analysis and examples. He will make you work hard, but he's fair and he's honest. I had him for 2 classes and his performance was consistently excellent.
